I'm at B on Kev's list. I would say I've been there since about 30 days or so. Before that, Definitely D. Bear, I know we're all different but for me, accepting and continuing to accept that I am an addict helps me to stay quit. If I ever let myself think I'm not, that it isn't like an addiction to an illegal drug or being an alcoholic, then that's the beginning of the slippery slope towards "just one". Not saying that's what's happening to you, but be careful, buddy. Speaking of addiction, allow me to post this article which my doctor gave me very early in my quit (in 2003). It has been posted here, bumped, and revisited many times. I think it's worth bumping it up again for all you new guys. ADDICTION I am addiction. I start in small subtle ways promising many things. I googled addiction, and a medical site stated that one of the characteristics of addiction is that you have physical withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop using the substance. Certainly for an illegal drug, addicts do sneak around and "resort to whatever they have to do to get their fix." But for a legal drug such as nicotine, no one has to go to those extremes...cigarettes are easily attainable. I think that's where we as smokers get tripped up...we try to align ourselves with the junkie in the alley as our only image of an addict and it doesn't fit and so we can more easily say that we aren't addicts. Hey that's an excellent question Kev. Three months ago, I would have been with you on C maybe even D (Like Tam said if I was drinking that would have made it worse.) But now, today, I am able to leave them be. My daughter smokes and she has been over here lots and I do Ok. Sometimes it bothers me that they are there, but I just remind myself of how far I have come. I do remember times though, wondering what the h-ll was wrong with me because I couldn't leave them alone! Bear, good question! Different strengths of addiction maybe. I am guessing ones that have a weak addiction may not think they are addicted at all in some cases. Being of a very strong addiction I know about. Maybe a test would be something like : A friend leaves his pack of smokes and a lighter in front of you and says 'can you look after this, I will be back in 2 hours?' Would you : a) Happily leave them on the table and not even think about smoking them. b) Glance over to them once in a while and think 'just one' but stop yourself and are soon back to do doing what you were before you glanced. c) Your eyes never leave the packet. You have to self check every minute to ensure you do not smoke the cigarettes. By the time the friend comes back you have exhausted all reasons you think of to keep quitting and by now are left with no fingernails because you chewed them off. d) Smoke the whole lot and then rush to the shops to buy your friend a new packet. I know I am somewhere between c and d still.
