Well I know one thing, the world has to be making progress when it comes to keeping under age kids from smoking. I remember starting when I was 14? You really don't see that much anymore. Most kids are turned off by smoking, which is a good thing. Yes, I agree that the minimum age should be raised, too. I am a very obnoxious ex-smoker & I love it. If I had known I would get such a kick out of being self-righteous & sanctimonious, I would have quit long ago! That's a good idea, a cigarette store where you have to show photo ID and they should raise the age to 21, minimum, to buy them. Well, that's a very good point, John. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that, either. I know that about 75% of my teenage life was conducted well below the parental radar, & as you said, Lainey, you discouraged all your kids from smoking but one of them started anyway. I think most parents are responsible with their kids about the smoking issue and the little darlings do it as a way to rebel. And it's a pretty easy & visible form of rebellion. Of course, we can't expect the kids themselves to do the right thing. They have enough to deal with, what with the seething hormones and keeping track of whether it's cool to show your underwear this week. I don't know what the answer is but I believe the sale of cigarettes should be much more strictly regulated than it is now. I don't think you should be able to buy them at gas stations & corner stores. I think they should only be sold at liquor stores or something like that. But the responsiblity should lie with the parents. I have one smoker out of three kids, why did the other two get the message that smoking stunk, the third one didn't? You know when she was 3yrs old I could tell she was the one who was going to try it. She was the one who wanted to pick up the cigarettes and pretended to smoke, the others were grossed out.But no matter how much I tried to tell her it was awful she still started smoking. She also was the rebellious one. I thought Disney had done that years ago! What I actually meant to say in that other thread is that while smoking is NOT so much the rite of passage it was for us, it has become more of a rebellion thing now. I think a lot of kids start because their parents are so against it & the health concerns are nothing to them because we know teenagers are 7 ft tall & bulletproof.
