This is such an insidious addiction because it's legal. My kids don't smoke but MOST of their friends do. Shocked & amazed that kids still start with everything we know now, I asked my daughter what's up with that. She said that she isn't interested in smoking because it has disgusted her since she was small but most of her friends' parents don't smoke! So they still think it's glamourous & cool even though there is so much more media now saying it isn't. They, like teenagers will, think it will kill everyone but them! And cigarettes are relatively easy to come by, you can smoke them out on the street so everyone can see how cool you are, & even though you're supposed to be 18, no cop is going to bother to pull over & ask for our ID just because you're smoking. Rather than the rite of passage it was when I was young because all the grown-ups smoked, now it's a teenage rebellion thing because the grown-ups don't! The fact that you can rebel & do something that your parent would abhor but not get thrown in jail, attracts a certain kind of passive rebel, I think. Our governments are even more addicted to the tax revenue than we are to the nicotine, so I don't expect anything to change anytime soon. I am just thankful every day that my kids haven't fallen victim and I send hope & strength to every kid who has. It wasn't one thing that led me to quit smoking, it was everything. I don't blame anyone but myself for the decision to smoke just as I wouldn't take one from anyone now. You couldn't give me one. I have taken this up with my representatives and I believe we all should, but you must know that this is now politically correct and almost all are on board. I'm asking for higher taxes on cigarettes and smokless tobacco products. Our representatives have to hear from us that we believe this is working to discourage new users and current users. It's no more a penalty to smokers than an asprin is a penalty to a headache. There's a reason not everyone is driving high priced cars and living in mansions, not everyone can afford them. I think when you have to take out a loan to buy a carton of smokes then we've arrived at the right price for them. This is what I believe and I act on my beliefs, always have. When I was young I was bullet proof, nothing could hurt me. Sure I knew they said it could cause cancer, there's a statement right on the side of the packs. Smoking was something you just did. Driving a car is dangerous and we all do that, right? I started because I was supid. Kept smoking because I was addicted. Quit because it was hurting my health. I could afford to keep smoking, the money was there. My kids can't afford it though and as you can probably tell, I'm all broken up about that. I'm glad this thread has sparked all these thoughtful responses. I agree we are all personally responsible for our choices. What I am frustrated with is that the tobacco companies continue to be allowed to produce their deadly products and, as you have said, in ever more deadly forms. And also that the governments haven't allocated enough settlement dollars to help those who do want to quit. I know that I would not be however many days quit I am if it were not for chantix and this site. I feel fortunate that I could afford the chantix. And yes, it is the pharm industry who sets the prices. But, there is plenty enough money to subsidise the medication for those who can't afford it, and it is not being done. Also, I stumbled upon this site. It would be great if every state, or at least every nation, had a site like this, or at least advertised sites like this. I'm sure there are other means by which people who are thinking of quitting could be helped, rather than penalized by higher taxes and anti-smoking laws. The money is there, it's just not being used for smoking cessation. I do plan to address this with our state legislature this term. We'll see what happens. I think now we are in complete agreement. There is surely no other product so vile and disgusting allowed to be sold anywhere and this one is available everywhere. There will likely never again be anything like the tobacco phenomenon. If it were a new product it would certainly be illegal. With it's rich history and tax revenues though it will likely always be available. Couldn't they at least take HALF the nicotine out to give some of us a fighting chance? Greger, NO my parents actually offered a reward if we didn't smoke until we were 21! ( I wanted to be cool though.) My frustration is in, the product kills people (thanks to all the extra additives added to an already dangerous product) and it is still on the shelves. What other product anywhere, in any country, that kills people has been still allowed for sale??? None.(I am trying to think of products pulled, with out much success, ephedra is one...) But because they get all the taxes from tobacco, it is still allowed to be sold. You can't tell me that it wouldn't save some 12 - 14 years olds somewhere from smoking if they could not buy them in every corner store. Sure they put those ugly lung pictures on the pack and think thats going to help. The education of what nicotine does has to be alot stronger than it is now. We need to teach people more about the addiction part of it. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 188 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,700 Amount Saved: $1,983.40 Life Gained: Days: 22 Hrs: 23 Mins: 43 Seconds: 39

AS much as I'd like to I just can't blame the govt for my own personal choice to do something my Mommy warned me about and spanked me for. WHat was I thinking? THat my mom just didn't want me to be cool? Lainey, did your folks encourage you to smoke? Or did you sneak around like most of us knowing we were forbidden to do it but doing it anyway. If I have any valid complaint it would be that additional nicotine has been added to cigarettes to make them more addictive during a time when science has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that smoking or even being near smokers is detrimental to your health. Selling a product that naturally contains dangerous chemicals isn't so bad as adding dangerous chemicals intentionally to make it more addictive.
