time seems weird when I do not smoke

16 years ago 0 3307 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well those "rewards" put me outside in all kinds of weather, banned to the garage when the weather was bad, made me uncomfortable because I was somewhere and couldn't have my "reward" so on and on and on. Now my reward is I can stay inside if I want, I only go to the garage now to get my car, I can go anywhere anytime and be comfortable, and other reward are I smell better; I don't stink like an ashtray. I can sleep at night and not have to get up for my "reward". I have gone though most of my trigger situations. I had a horrible crave this week-end, but got though it. As an exsmoker I do expcet triggers and I do except craves, but I do not expect to smoke over them. My reward today is I am smoke free and can come here and tell everyone that. I also agree with this it seems some days go by ok, but then others feel like their moving at the slowest speed possible lol.... because I can no longer have one of my best friends which is now my enemy cig. It seems like theirs two guys fighting inside my head one saying its time I just cave in and have a smoke, and then the other one I listen to that says its not worth it and you will regret just having one puff, and that makes the hrs so hard to deal with sometimes :( But so far i've stayed strong even though some days are real real real hard for me as it is for others here as well but being smoke free feels so much better then being a smoker doesnt it!! And grats on 94 days smoke free thats a amazing job My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 165 Amount Saved: $47.44 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 12 Mins: 32 Seconds: 13

new me, I agree with you too. I find myself turning in circuls trying to figure out what to do after each task I finish because that is when I used to smoke.I try to change my routine but still you have to stop at entervals and there it is again. Deep breathing is what I tell myself to do but in reality I am actually holding my breath before I realize I need to deep breath. Time is weird. Too slow or too fast. I am looking forward to a relaxing time with no thoughts of smoking. Totally agree with you on this - you put it on paper nicely. Just can't see myself poppin open the hydrogenated vegetable oil and having a slurp. However, you never know till you try. How about just saying to yourself "Hey, new me, you did a great job grocery shopping." Sounds corny, but recognition and internal reward all the same. Every little bit helps. new me, Look forward to celebrating 100 days smoke-free with a big reward! A trip, a present for you, a family dinner! Sky's the limit :) Use that extra time to reward yourself with something other than a cigarette! Chocolate, coffee, favorite magazine or even a special dessert for dinner after your grocery shopping! You do have all this extra time and you can fill it with hobbies, activities and even you time! Josie, Support Specialist

Congratulations on 94 days smoke-free, new me. Time distortion is a big side effect of quitting. For some it speeds up, for others it slows down. And for some of us it seems to do as it darn well pleases and we just have to hold on tight. LOL I see your point about losing the incremental rewards the cigs provided us and that loss increasing the depression we naturally feel upon quitting. That makes a lot of sense. Now turn that "loss" (of illusionary reward) into gains. You have gained control of your life. You are gaining health. You are experiencing a touch more freedom every time you pass a point as smoke-free where you would have normally lit up. Instead of anticipating a cigarette as a reward for grocery shopping, how about purchasing some small treat for yourself that you can use as the reward when you get to your car? Even if it is pure high fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, it is better for you than a cigarette would be. :8o: When you get to your car, consider your successes in both shopping and quitting and enjoy your reward for both. Time is such a strange concept anyway. Now that i do not smoke, it seems even stranger. I guess it is because I was so used to having time cut up into sections..time when you did not smoke and time when you did smoke. Maybe, it is because smoking gave me something to look forward to. I am grocery shopping..kind of a boring activity after doing it for 30 years...but, when I get out of the store, I can have a cigarette! It was a small reward in an otherwise dull, repetitive existence. Most of us keep the same routine day after day; even on our days off of work. Having something to look forward to, like a vacation, a road trip, some event out of our ordinary existence, makes life a little more joyous. Using cigs as a small reward (it is the addiction we got to feed), gave me something to look forward to every hour, every two hours. Now, after 30 years, wow! Maybe that is where some of the quitting depression comes from. I feel that I have nothing to look forward to. Even so, I know that is an after effect of using nicotine for so long. I am glad to be smoke free, inspite of myself! new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 94 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,256 Amount Saved: $470.00 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 0 Mins: 12 Seconds: 9
