Bear, I don't think the discussion is inappropriate, but the answer to the question 'do you think that there are people among us that should remain smokers' is no. If smoking caused no harm, I would have probably not quit for financial reasons only. Now that I have quit; if somebody produced a 'safe cigarette' I wouldn't return to the habit/addiction as it now seems to me to be such a ridiculous thing to do! (especially for a horse) ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 528 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 15,840 Amount Saved: 3,960.00 Life Gained: Days: 84 Hrs: 20 Mins: 23 Seconds: 25

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Its a very very good question. Well if someone wanted to give up smoking that I thought could be danger to themselves, I would just support them very closely, especially during the first few days, no matter what the situation. I am not a health professional mind you, its just my personal opinion. They might have a different stance. I don't think anyone "should" smoke but I don't think everyone should quit right now either, although I'd like it if they did. Smoking is not the same as eating too much salt or chocolate, to me. Those things don't harm anyone around you for starters and while the problems they cause are not minor, they pale in comparison to the health risks and the societal toll smoking takes. There is never a "good" time to quit as most of us know but I believe there is a "right" time. Some if us seize that moment and turn it into the last quit and the best thing we ever did. Others watch it pass by as they watch their life pass by, in a cloud of numbing smoke. "Should" those people smoke? I don't think so but it only matters what they think & I don't know what that is for sure. I think it might be a case, at least sometimes, of "why does the caged bird sing?" It's all they know and they are afraid of freedom & everything that goes with it. Anyone can quit, anyone can get through the stress & anxiety and moods, especially with all the help that's available now. If someone chooses to smoke in the face of all that, either their right time hasn't come, they are afraid of their true self, or they're passively suicidal. I don't think it's because they "should" smoke. Quitting any addiction is a good 1st step in growing up. Some people never do grow up and they miss out on a gr8 experience that is better than drugs. It's hard & the junkie thinking is sometimes the hardest thing to deal with. Smoking is a drug that kills people. We do injest bad things so why would we want to add to it by intentionally sucking in deathly poisons, and kill ourselves even faster? Just breathe....... Hey Bear, I liked your post. Got me to really thinking. I don't think there is anyone who should smoke. I know there is alot of us addicted and alot who say they don't want to quit, but I don't think anyone really likes to smoke. It is very hard to stay disaplined enough to quit as you and I both know. I think that is the reason some people say its okay.
