Taking the bull by the horns ! - Baring my soul....

Thank you angelcapp... Yes it does take a lot of courage to overcome one's demons and I think that the nicodemon is yet another demon which claws away at us, especially when we least expect it. Like I explained to a friend.. there are different levels of survival/survivors. Some are much worse than others, but it's how we overcome and rise above them, that is the important part. Being at peace with the past and moving forward is paramount. Same thing with quitting smoking. Rising above the cravings, dealing with them and moving forward inspite of the discomfort but knowing that WE are in control - THEY do NOT control us we control THEM ! That is what makes us the victors ! Fight fight fight with all your might and you'll come on top ! :) xo My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 120 Amount Saved: $43.50 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 16 Mins: 55 Seconds: 22

I wrote this as part of my quitting process.. as well as to convey to others that we can win over the demons, especially the nicodemon if we muster up a lot of courage and strength from deep down inside ourselves. It was a hard thing for me to leave home. I left my sister and my mother behind.. I begged my mom to come with me and we could all live together, but she wouldn't leave him. Choices - in the end it all comes down to the choices we make. I would not be the person I am today if I did not make the choice I did 30 years ago. On July 6th I CHOSE to quit smoking.. now I am on another path to freedom :) xo My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 100 Amount Saved: $36.25 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 15 Mins: 17 Seconds: 34

Hey Sam, Isn't this a great way to be able to tell your story and learn that everyone has your problem. I too was from a disfunctional family. I am currently seperated from a husband of 44 years because addiction has taken over our lives. Taking the demon by the horns is what I am trying to do also.I've been trying to figure out where to start. Each time I grab a horn I seem to get slammed to the ground. This time I am trying to fix me. One minute at a time I am not smoking. I am one week free today. Maybe we can make this journey together. Awesome post Sam! Many of us have demons. You realize it and know it before going into your quit. It took me a long time to figure out what was going on with me. Seeking professional help was the key for me. I always thought that meant one was weak or crazy but I was so wrong. I guess that was part of my learning curve :) Smoking covered up a lot of emotional garbage for me and when I quit, I had to sort through all that stuff. It was difficult and even painful at times (extremely painful). It is the kind souls from the SSC that helped me through it all. My world changed when I quit and now I've learned the valuable lesson in life of not ever giving up. You are going to be fine Sam. Your quit is in the pit of your soul. You will succeed. You've got what it takes. I had a horrible childhood starting at age 15 - that's when I started smoking, 34 yrs ago .. I had an abusive father, emotionally and mentally he was killing me.. he and my mom both smoked. And he physically abused her :( He treated me as his live-in slave when I was home - "make me a drink" (he was an alcoholic), "here's the car keys go get me a bottle (rye) and smokes!" When he was up in the morning, EVERYONE had to get up. When he got home from work he'd always be in a bad ..horrible mood and on many occasions throw his dinner against the wall - why? why not! I ended school in gr. 12 so that I could 'escape' ..at 19 yrs of age I got a full time job, worked 6 months, found my own apt., furnished it, bought a car and I LEFT ! And never looked back. I took the bull by the horns back then to SAVE myself from this monster.. I mustered up the courage to do something for myself before my life could be potentially 'killed' by HIM and it was the best decision of my life.. at the time. Some people who smoke have many demons and smoking was, at that time, an escape .. it was soothing, relaxing, an escape... Facing your demons, confronting them and finding solutions will set you free. Sometimes it means seeking professional help to do so - but by whatever means do what it takes to heal yourself and then move on because there's a whole life out there and it's meant to be lived! And now at age 49, 30 yrs later, I am AGAIN taking the bull by the horns and SAVING myself from another monster! I am now facing head on with another demon.. the nicodemon and I am freeing myself from him on a moment by moment basis and as each moment passes it is a HUGE victory and I celebrate and embrace EACH AND EVERY MOMENT ! Are you taking the bull by the horns ? There's nothing to fear ! Dig deep inside .. you are stronger than you think ! xo My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 100 Amount Saved: $36.25 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 12 Seconds: 40
