Hi BH, good to hear from you as I think our quit dates were close and I remember you. Anyway my husband has difficulties quitting for the same reason. His is bipolar and strugles with every quit. This last time he quit a few months after me but did not make it.Our last quit (this is #3), we quit on the same day, can't describe that nightmare!!!! :8o: Anyway he has a dr.appt.in 2 weeks to try another medication as he still wants to quit. So happy you are not giving up either.Good luck....you will get there. ls My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/10/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 359 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,770 Amount Saved: $1,615.50 Life Gained: Days: 49 Hrs: 11 Mins: 23 Seconds: 47

I have a friend who is bipolar, and for many years there were no medications available that could help her. Most of them just made her a zombie. Now a new generation of drugs is available that works without all the nasty side effects. But you'll have to talk to a Doc on that. I am not up on the names or specs. Perhaps a local University Mental Health Dept. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 121 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,025 Amount Saved: $1,276.55 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 19 Mins: 18 Seconds: 40

Hi BGaines, I've often thought about you and I'm glad to see you back. I have not had that issue, but my son is bipolar so I have a teeny little bit of understanding about it. If at all possible, I think you must continue searching for a doctor or a specialist who has an understanding about it. At the very least, please keep on with your search for information on the internet and at the library. Perhaps the doctor who prescribes your medication would be willing to help you with this search and learn with you? In any case, I wish you well. Please stay in touch. I need to hear from other people who have a major mental illness, because every time I have tried to quit smoking I have had a manic episode. I just read at a medical information site that exacerbation of depression and bipolar disorder are complications of quitting smoking. I'm finding that the doctors are dumb about this. So they are not much help to me when I try to quit. I'd like to hear from others and their experiences.
