Working out causes Panic Attack

I totally agree with Darkblue. He is so right! Hang in there though it does get better. I have had the same issue. Now I do an hour of quick walking everyday and am going to sign up for dancing class. I also like to go to the gym  now. And hey, if I can do anyone can!

During a panic attack your breathing becomes very distorted - as you know!  Therefore even when you distort your breathing in a natural way, you associate that feeling with panic.  
Therefore you have already associated distorted breathing with panic.  So when your breathing does increase, you will start to panic.
 
This course has methods and tools that you can use to help you stop associating that fear with your breathing.

This program will help, do use it, until then perhaps like many of us, your associating the gym and panic together, because of the workouts it is normal to feel more out of breath, etc, and panic just magnifys any symptoms we get as panic itself,and that is all it takes to turn it into a panic attack. Speaking that you need to take your boyfriend with you speaks common among us as the safe person. Even though in our minds we not they dont not possess magical powers from the panic, yet they do give us such comfort that it does seem to help keep the panic at bay. To be sure, have you tried going to the gym, ONLY to observe for about 10 mins alone, not to exercise? If you find yourself apprendensive going there alone, its the association with the gym and panic alone not the workouts. If you are fine, comfortable, can walk around for 10 mins, completely relaxed just watching, etc. then it is definitely the workouts themselves. Let us know how it goes Trish

Hello everyone, I try to work out at least 4 times a week and always on the weekends. I have arthritis so there are some limits to what I can do. I do the treadmill for 30 minutes, and some light weight lifting afterwards. Everytime I go down to the gym at my apartment, I have to bring my boyfriend with me because I'm afraid I will have an attack after or during my workout. I've been on a workout routine for about a month and have noticed significant changes in my anxiety, but sometimes I can't bring myself to work out because I'm afraid of an attack. I live on the 2nd floor so I have to go up two flights of stairs immediately afterwards and that always causes me to hyperventilate.:( Any suggestions??
