Lily, Take it from someone who has been there, you are not doing anything wrong. I too wondered what it was that everyone else had that I didn't. After 2 or 3 months they were fine and I was still having a hard time. You said a mouthful when you stated that not wanting to repeat those first few weeks again was what kept you quit. That is exactly what I held on to. There was no way I could go through that first 2 months again. I still feel that way. The quit is different for everyone but believe me, not everyone has an easy time at it. I'll give my my history not to scare you but hopefully to encourage you. At six months, I finally started feeling better. At 8-9 months I could have a day without tons of thoughts of smoking. At 12 months I felt an extreme sense of confidence and pride in the fact that I had made it one long, hard year. Around 18 months I found I hardly thought of smoking at all. Now, when life gets tough the thought of smoking crosses my mind but there is no way I would act upon those thoughts. You may want to check with your doctor. I did eventually wind up going to the doctor for depression and begin a counseling program that I still work on today. Smoking masks a ton of emotions for me that I needed help dealing with. There isn't any shame in that (I use to think there was). You keep taking one day at a time and keep refusing to give in to the addiction. I've always said quitting smoking is a soul searching, life changing experienc. Enjoy it. You are doing great. The fact that you still struggle speaks volumes for your resolve. There isn't anything wrong with what you are doing. I hope this helps. Yes I know how it is Lilly, I just finally lost a few lbs this week. I found that weight lifting makes a difference for me. I lift 5 & 8 lb weights and just do a minimal circuit to keep things tightened up. Its just a 20 minute routine, 3 times a week, it doesn't really make you sweat alot but seems to help. You can look up routines online for upper & lower body workouts for 'fat to firm'. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 109 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,725 Amount Saved: $1,149.95 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 9 Mins: 51 Seconds: 50

Thanks everyone for the advice!!! I will look up self-talk in the search engine!! You are right I'm still thinking like a smoker instead of an non-smoker!!!! Now I need to wrap my head around being a non-smoker that is gonna take some work!! I've been walking 2 miles a day 4 days a week for several months weight still coming on!!!! The problem is I can't get my heart rate up in the fat burning zone where it needs to be because I take Beta-Blocker for my heart (my heart beats too fast beta blockers slows it down)!!! (mainly I walk to get the heart/lungs inshape does nothing for my bod!!! I need to quit eating!!! You know how that is??? My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 170 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,400 Amount Saved: $510.00 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 15 Mins: 18 Seconds: 3

Lily, I was having a tough time, too, last night. an't even blame it on a full moon!!! You are right where I quit quitting last year. Same time period, same everything. Just hang in there...I don't have anything better, but I think Penitent and Lainey do! Give the self-talk a whirl and go over your reasons for quitting again. It doesn't fix anything but it sure helps to keep things in focus. Anyway - six months is a HUGE milestone. Give yourself a pat on the back foor it, and try thinking about it like the celebration it should be!!!!! I hope today is better *hugs* My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/29/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 24 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 600 Amount Saved: $162.00 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 16 Mins: 29 Seconds: 40

Penitent, Thank you for the words of wisdom for Lily. Some of that hit my brain as with a branding iron. I am feeling convinced there is a two fold addiction. One is the nicotine...the other is mental. Some of us have not turned off the mental habit of thinking about them. After all...for decades we thought about them ALL DAY LONG. Yes..yes.. yes.... you hit the nail on the head. In all the turmoil of quiting and being so focused, we missed acknowledging who the new us is. We.ve done the denial..grief and anger....and it is time for some of us to move on to the acceptance. Thank you. ... and maybe you could try Yoga, Thai Chi, Chi Qung or similar activities. They, with slow movements, tone your body and relax your mind. Walking, too, would improve the shape of your body and is very relaxing. Wish you more peaceful smoke-free days :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/4/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 138 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 690 Amount Saved: $138.00 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 7 Mins: 8 Seconds: 58

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Dear Lily, I understand your problem and I too have some advice for you. Some people quit smoking but they go on thinking as a smoker. You're not a smoker anymore and maybe it's time to think like a non smoker. Non smokers cannot understand why anyone should miss a cigaret. What is there to miss? The stink? The stains on your teeth? The chance to get a terrible disease? If you can think differently it will be easier for you to enjoy your new life. You are doing great so far and for the weightproblem: That is something to discus with your doctor I would say. I understand that you don't like the problem but it's better than dieing from cancer. Try selftalk, that will help sometimes. I hope you can do something with my advice. Love and a big hug!! Hi Lily, I responded similarly to Bobbi earlier today. She is suffering likewise. I wonder if you have really come to terms with what you are doing. Have you accepted your own decision? Do you really want to be quit more than you want to smoke? Have you emotionally traded the cigarettes for the new, better life that is waiting for you? If there still remains conflict in those questions, then you may well continue to struggle. I wish you well and commend you on six months smokefree! Good Luck :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1130 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 22,600 Amount Saved: 5,650.00 Life Gained: Days: 181 Hrs: 12 Mins: 23 Seconds: 16

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Have you tried self talk, Lily? Perhaps you need to shut up the voice inside that keeps bringing up that subject! I used to tell myself, whenever a smoking thought came up "Smoking is not an option, so I have to do something else" or "NOPE, the door is closed on smoking!" and then do something else. You need to retrain your brain to think of other things. There are a couple of threads on self talk as well, just enter self talk in the search engine! I know some people may think it is silly but it works! The junky thoughts will keep coming unless you stop it! With the weight, we are in the same boat, quit first worry about the weight later! I would check with my doc if you can't excercise. What about walking, it doesn't raise the heartrate as much? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 109 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,725 Amount Saved: $1,149.95 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 8 Mins: 9 Seconds: 49
