Since my original posting on May 3rd ----- [b]I'VE LOST 8 POUNDS ! ! ! ![/b] In the last 12 days I've increased my walking distance and added one more walk into the day, plus I've replaced things like 2% milk with 1%, I have to have cream with my coffee so I went with 1/2 the fat cream, eating a lot more veggies with meals and totally cut out ALL breads and pasta's - no exceptions, no matter what ! So with the cut back on some fats, increasing my exercise routine and implementing more veggies it's working for me :) Now I have another 12 pounds to go.. woo hoo ! [color=Teal]Hi Gen... I like what you said ...'they've all shrunk over the winter'.. LOL ! Well I went over my diet and decided that now I'm going to cut out all breads. I will still have my cereal at breakfast but no more sandwiches on bread, or a bun, or rolls etc. I was out today and will replace bread with rice cakes. I tried it today for my lunch with a thin long piece of cheddar cheese (need protein) and it was really good ! Also figured it was more like 15 lbs that I gained so I've set myself a goal of 2 mths to lose it all ! If it means more physical activity and slight changes in my diet then so be it - but by July 1st it will be gone. Just to say I'm with you on all of this. The quit is great - to be quit and to stay that way - but the wieght gain is a real bummer. I've had EXACTLY the same thing as you this week. Clothes that were absolutely fine and - what do you know - they've simply shrunk over the winter. It's hard because it just seems so unfair since we are being so good at giving up the smoking only to seem to be 'punished' with this extra layer of padding but we must bow graciously to those further down the line than us and in a year's time come back here and be surprised and amazed at how we've lost it all. You're absolutely right Unpacked.. As I said it was just a shock and I am going to worry about the weight gain in another month or so. I'm doing all the right things and will continue to do so (especially the walking part after my cold is better) ! My pulse is 70.. was 70 when I smoked and is still 70 :) And I've always had low normal blood pressure too - 114/74 and that too has remained the same. Now back to drinking more tea, forget about tubby Jean..lol and crawl into bed and hope that the Raptor's win tonight ! When I was smoking, my resting heart rate was 83 beats per min. Today, it is 72 beats per min. It doesn't have to push blood through a bunch of constricted blood vessels-- it can do its job much more efficiently, using much less energy (calories) How much less? Well, 83-72= 11 fewer beats per minute, 11 x 60 = 660 fewer beats per hour, and 660 x 24 = 15,840 fewer beats per day. Think about it--because I'm not smoking, my heart beats roughly 15,840 fewer times per day. The energy it took to fuel that extra work--the load that smoking places on the heart-- has to go somewhere... and a lot landed around my gut to the tune of 9 pounds. So what?? I'll take those temporary 9 pounds any day. Over time, you can adjust your exercise routine... diet... lifestyle...whatever needs doing to get it off...but ONLY if you have a pulse! ;) Now get out there and feel good about this smoke-free month--your heart sure does!!

Jean - Unfortunately, I can completely understand what you're going through! When my weight gain reached 10 lbs, I stopped weighing myself. It's soooo frustrating!!! Pretty soon they're going to list me in the Guiness Book of World Records for fastest growing woman! The weather has finally gotten warm which means that I'm finally starting to wear my spring/summer clothes. Well, I got up this morning for work and spent 45 minutes trying to get dressed. None of my spring clothes fit. It was not a happy morning for this smokefree lady. Jean, You've got a great diet and exercise routine! Keep it up! The weight gain may have nothing to do with you. After we quit, our metabolism kind of take a dip. Our gut is also moving slower allowing for greater absorption of nutrients and subsequently we gain weight. Luckily, our metabolisms do start to pick up speed again in time. If the weight gain really begins to bother you, you can help your metabolism along by increasing the intensity of your exercise. Danielle ____________________ The SSC Support Team

Jean - It seems to be pretty common for us to gain weight at the beginning of our quits despite healthy eating and getting regular exercise. Now I have finally figured out the secret. Some people's spouses were having trouble with their wild mood swings. I prepared mine very well by being cranky on a regular basis prior to my quit. I haven't eaten healthy for over 40 years. I grew up on bacon and eggs, hamburgers, gravy and mashed potatos. Vegetables were those nasty things that you put on your plate to keep your mother happy. When I finally decided to eat healthy, my metabolism was so shocked, it will never be the same again! I do think that our metabolism does naturally start to sort itself out at some point in our quit. Unfortunately, it seems that weight loss seems to require some change (i.e. upping intensity of diet, decreasing portion size or changing what we eat) Congrats on 29 days...it will all come together in good time.
