Stoned, beta-blockers and exercise!

I've always heard "no one has ever died from mental illness" but that is untrue for physical illness. So try to get some sort of exercise regimen going...it may help for you...everyone is different in their recovery. Mel

Hi all. I take propranolol, i'm supposed to take 40mg three times a day. i dont though, i only take one a day, and not every day. I dont seem to have any problems at all on these things. I even have times when i take it for a couple of days, then i stop for a week, and only take it as i feel the need, and when i do , they do seem to help with my thumping heart. the only thing that worries me about these tabs, is as nurseboy says, they have a long half life so it's easy to over do it. i've no side effects at all though, as i can tell anyway. for me at any rate, these tabs are a lot less scarey to take than the prozac i tried, only lasted a few days on them... Nurse boy, I recommend that you discuss your medication with your doctor. He/she knows you best and would be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding this medication. Since you just started this medication yesterday, let your doctor know exactly what happened. This way he/she can give you specific guidance with respect to the events that occured at your workplace and what you should discuss with you manager. Looking forward to hearing from you again soon and your progress. Please keep us posted! Yes, i sometimes think..who cares if my cholesterol is high...i need to fix my mind first...who cares about my body. But maybe fixing the body will fix the mind...old philosophical question...is the mind the brain or apart from the brain/body..

nurseboy, I too take klonopin but only as needed. Sometimes when I take it, I feel pretty wiped out myself. Oddly, other times, I can't tell I have taken anything...and it was same dosage. I am guessing my reaction is dependent upon the severity of the anxiety at the time I'm taking it. And to answer your question, I DO exercise on a daily basis. I quit smoking 8 months ago, and this is when my GAD was diagnosed by the way, smoking was my "medication" and when that went away so did my sanity, anyway, even when smoking I always stayed active but nowadays I make it part of my daily routine. As a matter of fact, I just finished running 3 1/2 miles before I posted this. If its too hot outside, I will do kickboxing or taebo videos or lift weights...anything along those lines that will help me relieve frustrations and stress. It feels SSSSSSOOOOOOOOO good to me during my exercises but to be honest, after the rush is over, my anxiety is still there for the most part. I really began my routine to help conquer this anxiety. It doesn't help me. Or maybe it does and my anxiety could be 10x's worse if I weren't exercising, but I don't think that is the case. When I first started running, I would have anxiety attacks and have to stop. I would envision my heart beating too fast and I would have a heart attack or I would get too hot and faint...it was endless. I am comfortable now with that part of it but it took a while. However, exercise is going to be beneficial for you physically so lets at least try to keep our bodies physically healthy even if we can't get our minds where we want them! Good Luck nurseboy... Mel

Nurseboy, Yes Im on a beta blocker, Atenolol (Tenormin), its normally a blood pressure medicine, but prescribed for panic disorder for people who have rapid heartbeats. The down side, it slows down your heart beat, makes some feel very weak, and your extremities tend to be cold. It is suppose to suppress the adrenaline rushes. I only get the rapid heart beats during panic or high anxiety status. My doctor is now weaning me from 50mg to 25mg, as my heartrate was in the 50's range. This is one medicine that if you decide to take, you take as prescribe, dont miss a dose, dont abruptly stop, you will have rebound tayhcardia and possible chest pains making you feel like your having a heart attack. I would really only suggest you decide on this if you have tayhcardia on a regular basis (outside of panic attacks). Im wondering if the klonopin was more sedating that you had been under high anxiety, and probably little sleep, therefore, really making you feel as a stoned zombie.

Started klonopin yesterday. i was using it as needed but stopped it as i felt i didn't want the crutch. yesterday i took 3 tiny doses, 0.125 mg at 12p, 6p, and 12a and one this 6am. by noon i was sent home from work for being unfit to practice nursing. It called my manager what i was taking and that it was half of what i'm prescribed and I AM STONED. It was worse than panic because i was in such slow motion i couldn't do anything to distract my self. BEWARE! Since the halflife is so long...i'm still stoned. SCARY! Anyone ever try beta blockers for anxiety like inderol or propanolol. they are supposed tp slow the adrenaline release and keep it from making your heart pound in an attack. who exercises? does it help?
