Fly Congratulations on your decision and for the first day. In my book, sleeping is an acceptable coping strategy..one I recommend highly. It will not last forever. Pamper yourself. Think of it as a reward for doing this wonderful thing for yourself and loved ones. Yes on the water!!!! it is a good no calorie replacement for smoking, as well as helping to flush the toxins out of you. Am I reading you right that you have cut out caffeine at the same time? If so, your body is going through two withdrawals at a time. Some people seem to have done this, others take it one at a time. If you're worried about drinking coffee triggering urges to smoke, you can always change up the coffee drinking a bit. Others have done that, but I can't remember exactly how. Others? Maybe you can help? I think it's natural to be scared and go through all kinds of emotional reactions to this decision, but I hope some of the reactions are excitement and pride. You can do this! Hey Fly, I know exactly what you mean by wild dreams, The past 6 nights, since I started the patch, I've slept horribly, and wierd/strange/scary dreams...I know it is from this patch, may try to take it off tonight, but worried about my "first morning cravings" as soon as I wake up.... Keep up the good work. Hey Fly, I agree with Lainey, I always took the patch off before bed (forgot once, had a night of wild dreams and tossing and turning). Do whatever you need to these first few days, if things get tough send out a post and someone will respond quickly. Hang in there, you're doing GREAT!!! Hey Fly, I wouldn't reccomend putting the patch on before bed. It is very likely what kept you up last night. I have had that happen, it's not fun. Most people out it on first thing in the morning, and at night some remove it, others don't. It does lose its potency over the day, so isn't as strong by night (if you wanted to go 24 hrs.) :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 93 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,325 Amount Saved: $981.15 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 10 Mins: 29 Seconds: 2

Keep doing whatever it takes to not smoke. Once you get your stats climbing a bit it gets easier. You sort of want to see your numbers grow. Look at all the people here who have gotten through the first week. Your just like us...you can do it too. Come here and let us encourage you. The first few days take an hour at a time. Then you will take a day at a time. Pretty soon you will tell yoursleves....one more week. I'm getting to tell myself... hmmmm almost another month. There is people here (believe it or not) that count YEARS!!!!! :p Tip: Watching Movies passes time....and gives your mind a rest from thinking about it. Your doing great Mercy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 136 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,720 Amount Saved: $607.92 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 22 Mins: 20 Seconds: 6

Hey Fly, I know exactly what you are going through. It is day 3 for me "Cold Turkey" and it is not easy.... One coping technique that seems to be working is cold water. I keep a cold water bottle with me at all times and when I have a craving come on I chug the water. Helps alot. Good luck My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 75 Amount Saved: $45.00 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 6 Mins: 34 Seconds: 33

Hey Penguin ... I'm hoping the need for the sleeping technique will dissipate ... I've got to become much more comfortable with more viable methods as quickly as possible. I'm thinking that once my mind and body are a bit more accustomed to being awake without the constant caffeine/nicotine stream, it'll feel more like being up and around! Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking. I understand your fear, but you know what, half the battle is over now that you have started. The hardest part of quitting, I believe is starting. I have used the patch a few times, and a few people will here will probably agree, that not wearing it at night will help you sleep better. But do what you feel will help you the best. Sounds like you are well prepared and stay close. You may need to hide under the covers a lot in the next few weeks. You wouldn't be the first to do that. I still do it. Keep up the good work. Half way through day one, and I must say that this is much more difficult than I thought it would be. I've done a fair amount of sleeping today ... partly due to the sudden absence of nicotine and caffeine, and partly - I think - as a psychological coping mechanism. I'm allowing this for today, and just going with whatever feels good ... but I will have to lean more heavily on the other tips and techniques I've heard of and prepared by tomorrow ... sleeping half the day won't be practical or possible for much longer! My partner, who is also quitting today, also seems to be doing quite well, from what I gather from a few e-mail messages sent from him from work today. Into the second half of the first day ...
