Thanks for that Mercy. My theory of the moment is to avoid dairy. Just feel that it maybe doesn't 'agree with me'. You're right though. One thing at a time. Gen, Hope your surgery goes well. I will think of you. As for weight. I look at it this way. If I can make the year and somehow master the quit.... I CAN DO ANYTHING.... including losing some weight afterwards. hang in there...Mercy ps: I do believe there is something to good carbs and bad carbs. They are just now really proving that different calories from different forms do different things. Sugar is proven to go right to the gut and so does trans fats. Other foods/fuels we take in by mouth the body will use for energy and the rest excrete. Thanks for the responses. This is where this site earns its stripes for me. Good advice in moments of distress and anxiety. I'm sure you're all right and that I should just wait till after the surgery - it was just trying to find something to wear in our current heatwave that threw me into a panic. Giving up smoking governed my thinking for the the first month or so and still takes up a lot of my thinking time but I am sure I am now completely done with cigarettes just wish this particular side effect wasn't so uncomfortable! Thanks again. Gen, You're getting too worried there Bud! The weight gain from quitting is TEMPORARY! It is going to disappear sooner or later. And most people lose weight when they have surgery, so don't fret, it will all work itself out. I was up there at my highest too. Your body is just compensating for all this newness. The chemicals are gone, a drop in metabolism and then we try to eat lighter so our body is hanging on for dear life...Relax, Josie has some great advice there. Plan ahead for the surgery first worry about the weight later! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 91 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,275 Amount Saved: $960.05 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 4 Mins: 14 Seconds: 35

gen, Yes, one step at a time! Prepare for this and do some cooking and freezing. Have your veggies chopped and low calorie snacks ready. Surgery is hard on your body, so please take the rest that you need and keep focused. Grab some books, magazines and crosswords to keep you occupied if you can not leave the house and treat your body well :) Josie, Support Specialist

I'll pass along the advice that was given to me: Worry about one thing at a time, as it sounds like you're a bit stressed. You're doing well with quitting, and you've got surgury to contend with soon. Get through that, as you probably won't be able to exercise for a bit anyway (depending on what you're in for). Once you get through that you can start to tackle the weight gain issue. I know about hitting your all time high - I did that my freshman year of college (the freshman 50 - it was horrible). I had lost 30 of that within the next 2 years, but I was inching up the pounds just when I quit smoking, and now I think I have an explosion. I gained 4 lbs this week!!!!!! So one thing at a time. That's all you can do. Good luck on your surgury!!! I am fatter now than I have ever been in my life. It is very shocking and requires a whole re-adjustment to how I feel about myself. I was mildly overweight when I stopped smoking but now - in the last month it has reached an extreme. I read a post somewhere where someone gave a list of things to cut out to lose 200 calories per day. I don't eat any of those things. I don't eat loads of anything really. I don't drink. I'm going for an operation in a couple of days (if they'll operate on someone my size!) and then wil be confined to the house for 6 weeks at the end of which I hate to think how huge I will have become. One thing is for sure though. I would not, could not and will not start smoking. It's just a bit sad that I should be feeling so much fitter and I'm not because I'm so fat. Feel better for having had a bit of a moan though....
