Flickering Vision

Thanks for that Chipmaster. I never knew migraines could produce dark vision blotches. Thought that was always associated with serious vision symptoms. Well it did pass after quite a while, tad longer than 20 mins! Bit scary. Got the same dark quick flickering today. But soon followed a headache. So aye, think theres a pattern immerging here! Also think I'm long overdue for a trip to the chiropractor. ;) Thanks again to the both of you.

Hi there. There are 2 types of classic migraine auras. You will normally experience them for up to 20 minutes before the onset of a migraine. Positive auras are the ones you usually get, with colorful flashy squiggly lines. Negative auras are plain white or dark blotches normally, they can totally blank out parts of your vision. The good news is that they are just the onset of a migraine, and they do pass within 20 minutes. IF they dont, or you notice other significant changes that bother you, see your dr about it. Out of interest, I am on an ssri (luvox) and around 4 weeks into it I had 2 classic migraines within about 6 days. Ive never actually had one before in my life - not a classic one anyway. It scared me the first time, because I had no idea what was going on. Out of interest, another 2 months on, I havent had any more of them. My GP thought it was weird too.

Thanks Trish :) I just spoke to my mate and he said he gets this symptom from time to time too. Feel better about it now knowing someone else gets it and doens't freak out! Just thought it was odd cause the flashing is kinda dark, not white like I usually experience with migraine. But my mate said he gets the same thing, so I guess it's nothing too serious. Thanks again.

Sky, I think its the onset of the migraine, they are classic for auras of flickering lights, zigzag lights, spots, etc. Detached retinas are more symptomatic if your vision becomes more shadowed in one eye, darkens and basically overall dim. Take your medicine for your migraine, try to relax, and if your vision worsens, then make an appointment with your eye doctor.

I’m having a stressful day today. I was going out but then my car wouldn’t start. My partner’s gone out so I can’t use his car either. I got so angry cause my car wouldn’t start and really tensed myself up. Don’t know why I got so angry either, just did, was rather odd. I’m over my bad mood. But now I keep getting these weird flashing things with my vision. It’s like a light flickers once. The flickering started after my angry outburst then I got a migraine. I get migraines when I stress out, I’m pretty used to them and they don’t make me panicky. I always get white swiggley lines and dots with migraines and I did this time too. But never this flickering thing. It happens so fast it’s hard to tell if it’s really happening at all! I thought maybe it could be a twitch in my face, you know sometimes your eye lids twitch and such. Because I had a slight twitch before too. But that was hours ago, the twitch has gone but the ‘light flicker’ vision thing is still happening. It maybe happens three times an hour. It’s freaking me out cause, of course, I gotta jump to conclusions and fear the worse! I’ve been looking up vision symptoms for migraine on the internet and a couple of sites have mentioned ‘flashy vision’ and ‘flashing lights’ I’m not sure if this is the same thing they’re talking about. It doesn’t appear like lights, it’s more like a light switches off for a split second. But then it also feels like I could be imagining it, it’s that quick and slight. Does anyone experience this with migraines or should I be phoning an ambulance for retina reattachment? I know that’s extreme, but at the same time I genuinely don’t know what to do and I don’t want to waste emergency service time if I’m just being a hypochondriac. Bah, all because of a stupid car. Thanks for reading.
