Have your friends changed?

The same thing is happening to me, although I think it's more that it was in the works before and smoking is bringing it out in the open faster. All we do is sit around and chain-smoke on the porch. I'm realising how boring that is, and how intolerant my "friends" actually are now that I don't have the distraction and support of a cig. Used to be I would just accept whatever their opinions or thoughts were and if it made me angry, I would just light up a smoke and get over it. Funny, now that I don't want to smoke anymore, I'm finding it hard to stomach some of their discussions. My having ambivilant feelings about my friends has very little to do with THEM (they haven't changed), but is more to do with ME and how I deal with them. I need more time to think about it and learn to deal with my own anger issues before I take on my friends, though. This journey just seems so much like an Awakening (to me anyway). Old friends seem to go to some degree and new ones find their way. Lots of changes and growth and no ashtrays does make a difference esp. to old friends who smoke... Hold on tight - changes do seem to happen but this is so worth it. Carylene, Quitting isn';t only a huge change for you but for others as well. Don';t worry about it too much, you and your friends will learn how to be around each other even though your habits are different. Talking to them may help, just Ter mentionned, they may just not want you to be tempted to start smoking again. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

Most of my friends are non-smokers so this is actually good for me! There is one lady at work who was my smoking buddy (now she's the only smoker at work). She is really mad at me and called me selfish to be quitting! She doesn't want to go outside by herself. I was shocked she would actually be so tacky about my quit, but I just calmly told her it was something that I have to do for myself. Now she just stops at my office door and announces everytime she goes to smoke! But hopefully she will get over her hurt feelings because I'm not giving up my quit for her. Thanks for posting Terri! I think I am going to mention to each one that I am doing so well, it's not even tempting to be around smoking (that is true, I wasn't at all tempted by my brother and his chain smoking family all of Memorial day). I hadn't thought they are trying to be considerate, I thought they were uncomfortable not smoking in the house. Maybe I'll buy an outdoor ashtray or something... Hey Carylene, Most of my friends are smokers, I know what you mean by the visits. It is not like that anymore. I did not lose any friends. My best girlfriend says she stayed away because she didn't want to make me smoke....not gone to happen. It was like that in the beginning, the "drop-by" visits are back. Were your friends mostly non-smokers or smokers? Mine were mostly smokers and now that I have quit I am noticing a gradual decline in the "drop-by" visitors. I think it is because there aren't ashtrays and no smoking in the house. My non-smoking friends are still the same, my smoking friends call, but don't swing by as they used to pretty regularly. Anyone else notice changes like that? I hate to think that friendships are so tenuous, but I dropped quite a few friends when I quit doing drugs (back in the day, many many years ago) and there was no question that we just would not be friends any more. I hadn't thought about that for smoking, and still don't. But yet, there is the distance that wasn't there before...
