I agree that "I used to smoke" is such a personal sentence that it evokes very powerful emotions in some. For some people, it may make them angry when they think of it because they still feel guilty for their past mistakes. Others may be ecstatic because it means that they are free from the addiction that held them hostage for so long. Others may still be grieving the loss of the cigarette, their friend, and that sentence may cause sadness. Still others may just see it as a fact, and accept it without it triggering too much emotion.
For me, that sentence evokes pride... pride in the fact that I have done something that I never thought I could... something that SO many people I know would like to do, but yet haven't.
