Smoke in the air & cravings

16 years ago 0 39 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I went to Vegas at about the 60 day point. I drove down with two smokers but they were very polite. Once we were there, I was surprised at how few smokers I saw. Of course I wasn't looking for them but it was not what everyone thinks. Sometimes a little smoke in the air is comforting and takes the edge off. I don't believer in the 2nd hand smoke theory. Different strokes!! I am able to drink, socialize, and party with only passing thoughts of smoking. After 50 years, I think that is normal. Have a good time and try to think about something else. Mylast, Thanks for starting this thread. My husband and I are leaving to go to Las Vegas Monday morning. I also have a few concerns about being around so many smokers. Since I quit, it is rare that I am around smokers. I plan on using all of my strategies.....especially rewarding myself with time for shopping! I'm sure the food will taste amazing, too! WOO HOO! Thanks for all the replies. I feel better now that I know that there are smoking sections. We probably won't gamble too much when we are there. I expect we will be going through and just looking at all the different attractions on the Strip. I will definetly keep a watch on my drinking. I am taking plenty of chewing gum and patches. I can always just walk outside too! Thanks again for all your replies! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Mylast, a bit more advice, Take it easy with the cocktails for your first trip out. Stay away from old favorites that you used to drink when you smoked. Try some thing different and keep the cocktails to a minimum, too many and the Oopes start happening! Have fun though, I am sure you will! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 82 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,050 Amount Saved: $865.10 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 0 Mins: 8 Seconds: 39

Mylast, You may not have difficulty in Las Vegas, because there are smoking sections for the smokers and most of these sections aren't very large. I don't know about down-town, but the Strip isn't the smoke filled place it once was. I'll bet you do just fine and have a really nice time! Mylast, There is no way to really know until you are there. Pack along some coping strategies just in case and you should fair well. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Mylast, Early in my quit I stayed away from my favorite hangouts since that's where a lot of triggers were. The first couple times I went to a bar, it was a new place with no old triggers and I was fine. Hopefully that is how it will be for you in Vegas. I also hope there is a good air cleaning system wherever you go. That helps. After about a month I started going back to my old haunts without any problems. Good luck, and have a wonderful vacation! Hi Mylast I just came back from a vacation and was worried about that too..mainly about old but familiar triggers I hadn't encountered yet. I printed out a whole list of self-talk things and kept them in my purse. Also a fake cig thing to chew on. Only once did I almost cave. At a bar/restaurant where I'd been before when I was a smoker. But, I didn't. I got out my list, and it helped remind me that I wasn't a smoker anymore. Funny about smoke for me. Sometimes I just love the smell of a newly lit cigarette, sometimes I don't mind it. But, I noticed on that trip that it would make me cough. I haven't been to Vegas for a while, so don't know what the smoking policies are now, but I know it used to be very smoky there. I think the main thing is, prepare yourself, as Lainey said. What will you do if you feel like smoking? Good you're going with non-smokers. Maybe they can help bring you back to your senses if need be? No matter what, have fun and NOPE! -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,560 Amount Saved: $435.20 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 0 Mins: 9 Seconds: 53

Hi, mylast. Good for you for anticipating that possibility & planning ahead. As Lainey said, you won't know till it happens. Personaly, the smell of smoke makes me gag & has the opposite efect of craving, especially in large amounts. Hopefully, you'll be like that too. But if not, be prepared, maybe print a couple of posts that you find inspirational to take with you. have a great vacation!
