Husband thinks I will fail

17 years ago 0 18 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My husband quit 20 years ago and tormented me for years to stop smoking. Then, when I did, he made it clear he didn't think it would work and tried to convince me just to cut down to 5-6 cigarettes a day! I let him have it. Now he's being really supportive, even when I slipped this week. He tells me and everyone how proud and happy he is that I've quit. (He is a bit worried I'm going to make him cut down on the evening martinis, however, since I now have no bad habits at all except pretzels. :)) It must be hard to live with a smoker and try to quit. Just keep your psychic distance from him if his smoking or attitude is hurting your quit....the marriage will survive, although you will outlive him. Cigarettes Not Smoked

CandyCane, if you can, you should pay yourself the money that YOU are saving by NOT smoking. Pay yourself BEFORE your husband buys a carton of smokes. Yea, that sounds tacky but, it just may help things along some.
Yesterday he spent $27.00 on a carton and I am pissed.
Don't be pissed. Today, go spend $28.00 on a new pair of shoes :) And keep your quit! My hubby is still smoking but sure enough me quitting has made him start thinking. I expect mine and yours will both be coming along soon enough! Until then, celebrate you. x T My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 93 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,154 Amount Saved: 511.5 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 21 Mins: 10 Seconds: 30

Hi Candycane, More than likely, your husband isn't trying to be offensive by thinking of your Quit in terms of you failing. I think your husband really knows how HARD this addiction is and how HUGE it is to have a successful Quit. He's an addict and he knows how it feels to be in a place where he can't smoke and how absolutely nuts he felt by the time he was able to get to his cigarettes. Going from now on without smoking is just something he can't imagine right now. I'm torn on this subject but I do believe that a person has to quit when they've made up their own minds to do so. Sort of like a drug addict hitting rock bottom. Your husband says that he's not ready to quit. It sounds like he's being honest with you. He has to quit for himself and YOU have to continue on with your quit for YOU. Do this for yourself and in time, maybe your husband will be ready to quit for himself. Just think about how long you wanted to quit before you actually decided to do it. Your husband isn't as far along in the process as you are. With you setting the example, he'll get there sooner. I do believe that he needs to support you in your decision by not smoking around you at all. You CAN do this and we're all here for you. You're doing a great job. Keep us posted, okay? Candy, Sometimes those bets backfire on them. LOL There is this 82 year old spunky woman I know. A big tall statued German woman. Very independant. She had been a heavey smoker her whole life. She told me that years ago, when she was 74, someone told her she couldn't quit. She threw them out and quit then and there and never looked back. She said she really had no intention to quit..but it made her mad and she threw them out. LOL Another example of the power of the brain. We really need a topic started on BRAIN TALK!! I am seeing there is more to it then we realize!!
