Quitting is not an event, it's a process. I hope you find strength from those who have sacrificed their life to cancer for us to learn the hard way not to smoke! Keep the quit and SO glad you are back here . Stay strong. The thing is....you "think" you were free of the struggle. But you are fighting the wrong battle here. You are struggling "against" your quit. The quit is the prize, it isn't the adversary. Now that you let the demon take control, he will likely be back, hounding you to take another "break". You must not give in to this again. I have actually watched quitters set a pattern like this....keep from smoking and then reward themselves with a smoke....this is dangerous to your quit. I hope you can think this over and see that sometimes we fight the quit.....and it makes for trouble....reach out and embrace your quit....cling to it....give yourself rewards but make sure you associate them with having NOT smoked. You're doing great and you havent failed.....just don't let this happen again Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1910 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 76,437 Amount Saved: $10887 Life Gained: Days: 252 Hrs: 0 Mins: 21 Seconds: 36

Tryagain, Don't be too hard on yourself. A period of high stress can be difficult to deal with however I would encourage you to stop this slip from becoming a relaspe. Rid yourself of all access to cigarettes and start finding new outlets for your stress and emotions. Keep a journal, take a walk to clear your head, anything but light up. I think it's worthwhile to be reminded of something that Casey said a few days ago. "Quitting doesn't happen at once. Research scientists have found that most people try to quit seven times before they succeed, and unsuccessful quit attempts, while frustrating, are actually part of the process of quitting." - Casey, Support Specialist, SSC. Original posting here. We naturally want the the very best of results for others who are quitting, and we know that the addicted mind tells itself all kinds of things to justify smoking, so we feel compelled to be very honest, even brutally honest, with others who have embarked on their quits. And we do that, not out of a lack of concern... but out of an abundant concern. However, the reality is that most of the people who are ultimately successful in quitting are people who have tried to quit several times before. And why is that? Addiction to cigarettes is extremely powerful. Many millions of people have gone to their graves as active addicts, even though they knew they needed to quit, even though they desperately wanted to quit... and even though many of them tried. We'd all like to believe that not only do we know what it takes to quit, but that we also feel quite assured about our present efforts. "This time" we're going to be successful, whether "this time" is the first time... or the 10th time. And some of us will be successful, while the majority will not be. This time. The main thing is that none of us is willing to give up on ourselves. If we've learned the lessons that will insure a long term recovery from smoking, then we're in a very good place. If someone isn't quite there yet, then we encourage them to be honest with themselves and to keep trying. Having a cigarette is not the recommended way to quit smoking, but if someone does have one... then, pragmatically, there's only one thing to do; learn from the experience and get back on the horse. The alternative is a lot more pain, and perhaps death. And lets be realistic... some people do choose death over quitting, even if they never entirely admitted that to themselves. And addiction can do that; it can be so powerful that some will choose cigaret

tryagain.. It's been several hours since you posted here. Please post and let us know how you are doing. Personally I think that with that one cig you had there really is no need to reset your meter and then just move on.. what do you think? Put the past just where it belongs - in the past and learn from it. Anyway, if you have a chance let us know how you are doing.. Love and ((((((((hugs)))))))) Monica58 xoxo My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 76 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,536 Amount Saved: $684 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 15 Mins: 15 Seconds: 59

Pam, I totally understand what you are trying to get across to tryagain. You're not pissed off or angry with her.. it's just that you are afraid for her, with her way of thinking, and you're just trying very hard to support her in your own way :) tryagain this is exactly how I was feeling all last weekend and at the beginning of this week.. and these feelings were expressed by you --
It all got too much for me. I wasn't doing all that well, but I was hanging in there and very proud of myself for not smoking.
Everyone does things differently.. you went one route, where I took the other route - I posted here, just letting out my feelings helped me. I had my slips in the past and what I learned this time around was to come here 1st and post. tryagain.. I too was and still am in such despair and yes, everyone handles things differently.. But maybe in the future if you feel that "it all got too much for me..." you could 1st come here and let it out and wait for us to come to you? We care.. and we're here. (((((((((hugs)))))))) Monica58 p.s. As a result of coming here I had so many people coming to my rescue.. IM'ing me with their email addy's.. and you know what.. I still well up with tears because of their overwhelming support and true caring about me.. *crying now* My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 76 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,533 Amount Saved: $684 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 14 Mins: 52 Seconds: 48
