The Gum..The Gum..The Gum

Mercy - First of all, I wouldn't make any changes today. You had a tough night last night and are still adjusting from your vacation. Once you feel more stable, then I would tackle this gum issue. I agree with what everyone else seems to be suggesting...do a taper - don't just stop abruptly. I would start by cutting out one piece and substituting a piece of sugarless gum. Chew that gum like it's a nicorette (e.g. park it in the side of your mouth, etc). Wait a week, then go down to one piece a day (still substituting regular gum). Let us know what you decide and how it goes. I love the gum. I started out with the 4mg. Got down to 3 pc a day and stepped down to the 2mg. Then I had a series of disasters serious disasters strike and went to H with myself and went up to 5 or 6 pc a day of the 2mg. Now I'm trying to whittle that down. I have another month left in the 3 month program so I'm hoping to end on time. If I don't, I don't. I'm not smoking, I can wean off later as well as sooner. This is something I'm not going to drive myself crazy over.

I loved the gum, I chewed the gum from Jan. to March and it was great. However all good things have to come to an end, its only to last for 3 months. The last 3 months have been great, I saw a new me or old me thats been hidden in the smoke for the last 12 years. The gum gave me some great memories and I want more of them. I wanted to chew the gum forever, I thought it was also better than smoking, but it gave me a gum ache toward the end of March; so it was either go back to smoking or try some other aid. I decide to try cold turkey, with this support group as my aid.

I am the better to be safe than sorry gal, so I would go down to 2 a day for a few days, then down to 1 a day, and then a half. My reason being that hopefully this way you will wean off it gradually. Docs always tell us to go off medications / drugs gradually. Just my 2 cents! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 30 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 763 Amount Saved: $316.5 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 16 Mins: 23 Seconds: 18

Now how do I go further with this quit. I quit January 21st (sunday). I just made 10 weeks. All along I have used 2 or 3 pieces of 2mg gum a day. I was about to wean off the gum...but alas.... my vacation was just around the corner. I figured the gum was better than smoking. My choice to use the gum was right. There was a few rough times and it was good to have the gum. I saved all the plastic/foil wrapers from the gum I used while on vacation. I added them all up when I got home. Ironically....there was exactly 21 of them...haha haha. So... I was gone 7 days which averages out 3 pieces a day. I am pleased with that as I was worried I would have upped the usage and be more hooked on nicotine. Now that I'm home and getting acclimated to the real world again... in a day or two I need to somehow get off those 3 pieces of gum. Should I bite them in half...go cold turkey... go from 3 pieces to 2 pieces.... or continue to use them a while longer. I forgot how long the instructions was for the gum usage. Was it 3 months. Anyone know. I got this far... I want to do this right. That is, if there is a right way to do this thing. Thanks everyone.
