Hi Everyone, It sounds like you all are doing wonderfully well. I am slowly getting started again. I am still drinking way too much soda. I am going to try and cut back again. I have also stopped walking. Hopefully I will have shorter days this week at work and can start back. Just want to check in and cheer you all on. We will be skinny and smoke free in no time. Hey we already got the smoke free down. :) Julie My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/15/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 105 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,104 Amount Saved: $367.5 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 23 Mins: 39 Seconds: 23

Went to a WW group for the first time on Friday; I discovered they had a meeting right around the corner from my office and figured someone was trying to tell me something... I'm not a group-y person and I'm not much on the rah-rah, but it really gives you a plan for losing weight that makes sense. (Although I am SO depressed to find out that I'm old and not-so-fat so I get 19 points. Believe me, I could blow that in an hour on Peking duck.) Anyway, I'll stick with it for a month or two to try to lose the post-quit weight and then I'll see. I keep reminding myself that food is not really my problem -- no-one ever died from gaining seven pounds -- but that I was a frenzied, awful, addicted slave to cigarettes, and staying away from THEM is the most important thing.

Well, walking and watching how I'm eating this week seem to be working. My weight is down 2 pounds. Now I just have another 10-12 to go to be where I'd really like to be. (I was struggling to lose some weight before I quit). Knowing I'm not alone in this is encouraging. I haven't done the WW thing yet - I'm a bit afraid, believe it or not. Of going in myself, weighing in for others AND trying to stick to a REAL diet. You'd hardly know I was brave enough to quit smoking, huh? Hope everyone else is keeping strong on their quits AND diets! Hey guys, I haven't posted for a day or two here. I'm afraid I'm not finding the points system working to my advantage. There's too many choices for me and too much temptation(for right now anyhow). I've decided to go with the core plan. My sister talked to a lady who followed this. Basically its eating the 4 food groups. It whole foods with not as many preservatives. Anyhow, the lady said after following this she felt healthier with more energy. So tomorrow morning I'm giving it a try. Keep you posted, Cheers, Jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/13/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 105 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,170 Amount Saved: $945 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 21 Mins: 8 Seconds: 38

I guess there are alot of different ways to lose weight. I can't remember who it was, but one lady lost 30 lbs on a low carb diet. When I tried to cut back on carbs, I gave myself headaches. I'm really struggling with the portion control. I think that smoking killed my appetite. Now, when I finish a meal I'm often still hungry. So....for me, changing what I eat has been important because I seem to desire fairly large portions (I'd rather have a huge vegetarian fahita rather than a small piece of roast beef) I also have to exercise ALOT so that I can eat ALOT. This works well except for this week (I haven't been feeling so hot so I've been away from the gym but not sick enough to ruin my appetite!) Julie - You are so right...when we put something totally off limits, we feel deprived...I think I'm going to have to build in afew cheat nights every month or else it would be pretty easy to get discouraged. The program I started said, basically, the idea is portion control. Seems to me it says WHAT you eat isn't as important as HOW MUCH of it. You can still go out to eat, but take your time and enjoy the experience (not having to cook it...not having to clean it up!) and listen to your body saying it is full rather than letting an empty plate dictate the end of your meal. They suggest things like asking for the doggie bag when they bring your dinner, put your fork down between bites, etc. etc. They also say try to be the last one to finish (never a problem for me because I'm a slow eater anyway)--so you're not sitting there looking at your leftovers and picking at them more. I find that not owning a scale is probably a good thing, then I don't obsess about my weight. But I, too, have had days where I've thought I'd rather be an addict than be overweight. But I've come this far...I'm not going to blow that all away in a puff of cancer. This is a good thread for me, we all quit roughly the same time, and we all started with our weight loss plans around the same time. Let's all lean on each other My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 967 Amount Saved: $288 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 14 Mins: 10 Seconds: 16

I see I found the right group; I'm going to my first WW meeting ever tomorrow, having discovered they're right around the corner from my office. I quit almost 14 weeks ago and am depressed and panicked about having gained 7-8 pounds in that time. I was, by my standards, five pounds over ideal weight when I started...I've doubled my exercise, cut down on junk food and am still gaining weight! I even fell off the wagon and started smoking again, for one day, thinking I'd rather be addicted than fat. Fortunately that stupidity didn't last and I'm back to not smoking. I KNOW there is a metabolism issue here, it's not just snacking more. Before this I could eat lightly and exercise a lot for a week or two and lose the pounds...now they just keep coming... Phooey. Maybe I was really meant to be a fat person all these years who ducked it by smoking a pack a day. You said it........ " I really need to cut myself some slack on the bad days while keeping focussed the rest of the time."-Windy I have found that if something is totally off limits, then I really want that food item. That is why I am really trying to focus on moderation. Also, if you have the bad days, then pick yourself right up and start again. Whatever you do, don't give up. But I may not be the best person to give advice. I gain a pound, loss a pound. To me the important thing is to never give up. Remember we are here for you, you might want to yell if you have a chocolate craving. I know I had a severe one this afternoon. I even tipped the machine when it wanted to keep my candy. :eg: We all know not to mess with a lady and her chocolate. Hee Hee. I need permission to cheat! Just like quitting smoking, the whole process of exercising and learning how to eat healthy has been a roller coaster...one day i am exhilarated by my progress and the next day the smell of a tasty (high calorie) meal makes me want to cry. I have worked really hard but some days I have really blown it. Yesterday, I overdid my calories (I really wanted a snack while I watched my favourite show soooooooo I made my smoothie anyway....and then sat there and felt guilty about it) I have also been a little "under the weather", have missed the gym for 3 days in a row and will probably miss it tomorrow too. The problem is that I feel so guilty and let down for breaking all the rules....It's good to be focussed but I think that I'm a little obsessed....Has anybody else been successful in finding the middle ground? I really need to cut myself some slack on the bad days while keeping focussed the rest of the time. Jan, Don't be too hard on yourself! So you ate takeout, just make up for it by increasing your level of physical activity. Don't hang you head in shame, get walking and burn those extra calories. Nurse29, Try stocking the fridge with a few cut up fruits and veggies, for quick, reasonably portionned snacking. :) Danielle ____________________ The SSC Support Team
