4 more days until I quit...am i ready?

17 years ago 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi...my name is Shar and I am planning to quit in 4 days. I have been postponing my quit date for 3 weeks now and still ify about quitting in 4 days. I get really determined to quit a couple days before my quite date but as the date comes near I chicken out and postpone it to the following week. I have been smoking since I was 12 (I'm now 26). I can feel myself getting unhealthier each day I smoke. Especially because of my nerve pains caused by a major accident I got into about a year and a half ago. Smoking irritates my nerve more but still I can't seem to stop myself from picking up that damn cigarette. I have tried quitting before...and I quit for about 8 months but I gained so much weight..i got depressed and started smoking again. I think the reason why i keep postponing my quit date is because I'm afraid. I loved be smoke-free before but I'm too scared I'm going to gain weight and then again become so self-conscious and depressed. Any advise would be helpful. Do you think i'm ready to quit? Should i deal with my fear first before I set a quit date? Shar - you can do this! Try to drink a lot of water and take advantage of straws, toothpicks, sucking candies and gum to help with the oral stuff. I went the chocolate route and it DID put weight on me that I'm trying to lose now. Also, gotta say after reading what your friend said to you - with friends like that who needs enemies. You need to find friends who aren't so shallow. Maybe your non-smoking self will find itself in different circles! Meanwhile, take advantage of that great Calif weather to be outside and keep moving - walk, ride a bicycle, swim, etc... You can do this! Believe in yourself! Shar, when you quit you will have alot of time on your hands that you used to spend smoking. For me and my DH we are already wondering what to do with all this time. Both of us need to lose at least 50 pounds, so we plan to exercise - perhaps that will help your worry about losing weight if you planned that also!! You CAN do it!!! Sue just broke her 25 year habit! Thanks for all your feedbacks. I do absolutely want to quit. But I am also terrified of gaining weight. The last time I tried quitting, I gained about 20 pounds and it was just awful. I have always been skinny so gaining that much weight and having people come up to me and saying I looked much better before really hurted my confidence. The most awful thing I experienced was when I said hi to one of my friends I haven't seen in a while and he said.."man..i didn't even realize you..why did you get so fat?" People from southern California can be really cruel. I worked out 5 days a week but I just couldn't control my eating. I alternated cigarettes and stress with food. But don't get me wrong..I loved it when I didn't smoke. I loved being at a mall for hours and not stepping out every hour for a cigarette. I smelled better, my car smelled better, I felt healthier, i was able to breath better, and my headaches in the morning went away. Thanks Josie, I will carefully plan and prepare before my start date. I have listed out couple of activities but I'm still adding to my list. And I will definitely try vegetables and sugarless candy and gum instead of binging on fattening food.

Hi Shar - No one can answer your question but you. I do have a question for you: is your desire to quit stronger than your desire to smoke? There is the clarity! Unless the above is true, you will keep going back and forth. Spend some time here on this site reading and reading, and reading more. This site helped me tremendously at the beginning of my quit, and remember, smoking is absolutely a choice! Shar, Welcome nd congrats on a great decision! You have four days and this is the time to start preparing. Make lists of activities, hobbies, and coping mechanisms to get you through and keep you occupied. It's okay to be afraid and we are here to help. Take the time to work with your doctor to come up with an plan that is right for you and your body. Proper eating habits and exercise can assist you. Take the time to prepare for it and you will fair well :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
