I agree with Changing, I have so much less to worry about now. Go figure, we thought smoking was a relief from our worry and stress and here all it did was add to it. When was the next one coming, how many times can I get my husband to stop while we are on a driving trip so I can smoke. Can I get to the store before it closes for that pack of smoke? All of that stuff is gone when you quit. What a relief!!!!! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 29 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 734 Amount Saved: $145 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 2 Mins: 40 Seconds: 3

genevieve, Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking and Congratulations as well on quitting drinking! That's huge! You'll get some really great advice here and a lot of support. We all have our reasons for quitting and our own ways to do it. Just keep reading and you will find the knowledge and the coping skills you need to quit and stay quit. I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but all of here at SSC are nicotine addicts. You said:
It is like saying goodbye to a very dear old friend.
Sorry, but smoking is not a friend to us, it is simply an addiction we are all working to overcome. You can do it, and we will be here to help. Keep reading and posting...you're off to a good start. Genevieve - Becoming a nonsmoker is hard. It's really really really hard. If you haven't already - read my post "Dear Nicotine". While it has an undertone of sarcasm - there is an underlying truth to the feeling of breaking up a longterm relationship (nicotine). Keep reading lots and lots of posts. When I was looking for motivation to quit, a friend of mine (and former smoker) wrote this to me: "I hated that my day always evolved around my next smoke, and if there were anything in the way of me smoking (ie meetings, events), I would stress. Its like you said, I thought about it 24/7, and that thoroughly annoyed me. I hated that something had that much control over me.... Now, I don't have to panic over when/how I will be able to smoke and if I have enough perfume and mints to cover it up. I know it sounds corny, but its like the weight of the world has been lifted. I can't tell you what a relief it is not to worry about that stuff anymore." Cigarettes Not Smoked

Good Morning, Part of the trick here is to change what we are doing so that we avoid the triggers. Instead of smoking after dinner, brush your teeth, go for a walk, do the dishes, as long as it is something different that what we usually did (smoke a cig). Eventually the change becomes the habit and you stop thinking about having the cig. Instead of sitting in the sun with a drink and a smoke, sit in the sun with a glass of lemonaid and a twizzler or a straw. You still get the relaxation that you want with out the bad habit. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 27 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 683 Amount Saved: $135 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 21 Mins: 29 Seconds: 26

Hey. I'm thrilled that what i wrote yesterday appears to have got through somewhere. Never mind couselling and advice on stopping smoking, I need those same services for using this website. Anyway. Somehow I am through. Don't know where the confessions box is but I had one cigarette yesterday. I had it and I didn't really want it. It is like saying goodbye to a very dear old friend. Can't quite believe that I will say 'This is it. I am not going to smoke again'. Felt bad after I'd had it. Didn't really enjoy it at the time but it is like a rebellion. I know I should stop, that it is good for me to stop - for loads of reasons - but I don't want to be seen to be giving in to the pressure. Does that make any sense? I first smoked aged about 8 or 9 and then around 15 I started taking it seriously. I smoked then till I was 26 when I had hypnosis which worked well enough for me to stay off the fags till I had had two childen. Then, when the second one was about one year old (23 years ago) I started to have the odd cigar. This increased (with my drinking) to about 5 cigars a day with supplementary cigarettes. Then I had a dramatic curtaillment to my drinking career and ended up in hospital. When I came out I started on the cigarettes full time and have been smoking 15/20 a day since then. Today it is lovely and sunny here. The weather I would associate with sitting around in the sunshine having a drink and with that, of course, a cigarette. Since stopping drinking three years ago I have had to get used to not having that 'pleasure' and to now not have even a cigarette makes it even harder. The up side of it all is that the whole thing, although obsessional - to the point of dreaming about it - is liberating and energising. Just got to keep to the positives. What do you say?
