Smokers

My 2 cents? I still believe that smokers have a right to smoke. As a smoker, at work I was as courteous as I could be to the non-smokers. I didn't stand right next to the door, I didn't exhale in their direction, I made sure my cig was completely out before I left the area. I never threw a butt on the ground, or out a car window for that matter. I was going to be a champion for smokers rights...why can't we smoke in the outside air wherever we are? How can someone tell me I can't smoke in a public park, or at the golf course, in my own car in a parking lot, or in an open air restaurant? Nobody owns the air! Smokers rights are being eroded daily. Is it fair? Was it fair when you smoked? All smokers know the health hazards of the habit, but just as we did, they continue to smoke. We no longer smoke, but remember how we hated the reformed smokers telling us (again) what we should do? I now choose not to smoke. I will not become one of "those" ex-smokers. There are smokers at work who ask me how long since I quit, and I proudly tell them. They haven't asked me how I did it, or how they can do it, or anything else that leads me to believe they are ready to quit. If they ask, I will encourage them, and help them in any way I can. N.O.P.E. is my mantra (along with Junkie Thinking) but to each his own. If they want to smoke, let them smoke. Me? I love being a non-smoker, and 3 months ago I wouldn't have believed I would ever say that. I LOVE BEING A NON-SMOKER !! For those who know me, I think I am beginning to experience the freedom! Glory Be! At lunch today, someone asked me what I liked about smoking (when I did smoke). I could not come up with one ligitamite reason why I liked smoking. But I do remember defending my smoking to the fullest when I did smoke. Amazing how the addiction affects us. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,013 Amount Saved: $200 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 7 Mins: 0 Seconds: 56

Whynot and Lainey, This is your place and moment in time to quit, rejoice in that. We have all had those moments many times we neglected to act upon them. Take this moment and run with it just as fast as you can, never to look back. Continue showing yourself and the rest of us what it is like to be a shinning star. The other's moments will follow, we can only hope that they recognize this and seize the opportunity. Smokers believe that it is there god given right to smoke & aint no one gonna tell them otherwise.... i remember being this stubborn. As a smoker i was getting pretty close to wacking any non-smoker in the side of the head who started harping on about the hazards of smoking & how inconsiderate smokers are. Smokers will only listen to non-smokers when they are ready. All we can do is provide support when it's needed. I'm afraid that I still feel sorry for those Smokers. I was so ashamed of my addiction and my inability to quit....but just like an overeater or an alcoholic, I turned to the smokes every time that I felt bad. The more people criticized me, the more angry and discouraged I would feel....and, then, I would smoke more. I hope that I can inspire others to quit and I know that I will try my best to help others when they are ready. I just have to wait until they "are" ready. I always said that I wouldn't turn into one of those ex-smokers who would moan louder than anybody else about the smell, or start lecturing others on quitting... But I changed my mind! I now complain as loudly as I wish and constantly remind people how disgusting their habit is. It's the only way! I'm soooo glad that I don't smoke any more. My best friend is still a smoker and my quit is definitely taking a toll on our relationship. - It annoyed her when I talked about how nicotine is a drug and smoking is an addiction. - It annoyed me when she rolled her eyes and said, "Oh, please don't become one of THOSE ex-smokers!" - It annoyed her when I asked her if she knew the statistics about diabetics who smoke. - It annoyed me when she said "Yeah yeah yeah I know all about it, I'm three times more likely to die of heart disease, blah blah blah I don't wanna hear it," while she was sucking on a cigarette. We basically can't talk about the subject of smoking anymore. She's talked about quitting but has found every excuse to put it off. I know she has to get to that point where she wants to quit more than she wants to smoke - and she's not there yet. Me bugging her about it isn't gonna get her there any quicker. Me keeping my mouth shut while I continue to obviously enjoy my freedom from the addiction - that might help. i figure prayer's my best shot. I don't know any smokers that don't wish they could quit. Yes, we all say as smokers that we wanted to smoke and didn't want to quit but that is just the lies the addiction tells us. Most quitters find their relationships changing dramatically when they quit. Just keep taking it one step at a time and be proud of the fact that you are quit! You are doing an awesome job! Whynot, They just see you in a differently now. You're no longer one of them. Don't take it too personally. Keep leading by example and maybe they'll follow someday. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team
