Red Jester, Many of the ones I smoked were so habitual, but I would just tell myself that I enjoyed each one. Didn't want to run low, so tried to have a pack in reserve...you know the story....we all do. It's all in the attitude, as with anything. Positive thinking begets positive results and vice versa. Lainey - I'm with you on the need to "reprogram" our brains. I've been trying to do it by reading lots of posts, esp from some of the long time quitters and also by doing other "research" on line. I looked up RJ Reynolds site and got a good laugh at their so-called "governing principles and values". They just happened to include the fact that cigarettes are bad for you and people who don't smoke shouldn't start! Yet, they continue to make them and use trickery to add to the addictiveness for the poor souls (us until recently LOL) who do smoke! Anyway, for me, learning this stuff and sharing it with others, is helpful. But, the attitude, well having that be positive about the quit itself, is important. It really does seem to be your quit is as hard or as easy as you make it, doesn't it? The trick is how to undo all those "beliefs" we have stuck up in our heads as to how things should be.... I just finished reading Allen Carr's book! It deals alot with the "crap" we have in our heads from all those years of smoking and what we believed about smoking. Red Jester, What a great story- and congratulations on your quit. We are all different here, but you've found a great site for support and advice. As silly as it sounds one of the biggest motivators in my quit at this time is that if I screw up and smoke I'd have to reset my quit meter, and I won't get to post my stats on my upcoming 50 days- and that would really stink. Whatever motivates you is the right thing to do! Keep us posted on how you're doing. It's hard to quit smoking. Wait, wait, wait! Don't react yet! Here me out! Please. Okay, breath in, breath out. Now, there are things that we are told everyday that aren't neccessarilly true. Think back to when everyone thought the world was flat. Seems silly now, but people would live their lives based on this lie. Explorers would not sail past mapped areas for fear that they might fall off the edge of the earth. What they beleived, was always real to them. Before I quit smoking I had always heard that, "Oh, smoking is so addictive I can't quit.", "I'm going to gain weight if I quit smoking.", "I need ciggerates to calm me down" . . . ect.ect. . . If you think about it, you'll probably be able to add a whole books worth of "beleifs" to my short list. When I beleived that quitting was hard and it was going to only get harder when I try, I was absolutely correct. When I beleived that quitting was going to be easy, I was absolutely correct. Short story, (well, I'll try to make it that) My last favorite brand, Camel Ultralights! Man those things were CANDY! I loved them and openly declared that I did. They weren't available everywhere (especially in hardpack)but I had discovered the many places they were. I used to be a courier, and along my route I passed lots of stores that carried my brand. I awoke one morning, and discovered I was out of smokes. No problem, I'll just by a pack on my way to work. The store was out of them. No problem, I know of another store. Nadda. Alright then, I'll just stop somewhere else when I'm back on the road. I got to work, loaded my van, and set out on my day. Every store that I stopped at that day were out of my brand. What amazed me was that as I went through my day, I never craved a ciggerate. Even though I hadn't smoked a ciggerate all day, I didn't pull all my hair out, I was perfectly calm and content all day. I didn't think that was possible. I hadn't gone so long without a ciggerate without it being hell. I began to feel how easy it could be to quit smoking. As long as I was busy with something else, I wasn't busy with thinking about smoking. Long story longer. . . I went through that day, and the next, and the next, and the next. . .
