Kathleen, If you are the sort of person that turns into some kind of an irresponsible teenager after a beer, then don't have the beer!! Otherwise you can do it! And, as Dutch said, 'People who never smoked like beer as much as smokers do'. I enjoy a beer (and lots of other food and drink) MORE now than when I smoked. It's got something to do the tastebuds working again. I am grateful for this and have no intention of going back. Be careful, but as Phil said 'Life goes on'. Don't deny yourself all the other things you enjoyed when you were a smoker. Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 457 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,716 Amount Saved: 3427.5 Life Gained: Days: 74 Hrs: 12 Mins: 20 Seconds: 59

Kathleen, You always have a choice, you smoke or you don't. Don't drink too much beer, just a few and you can make it without smoking. Smoking is never an option. People who never smoked like beer as much as smokers do. Stay strong and don't give in. Dutch. My advice is always - don't take a risk if a risk is in front of you. That's my rule for me, and it keeps me grounded and focused. Healer PS: show your meter - not sure where you are in the process. Kathleen, You've gotten some great advice from you fellow members! I can only echo them. Plan for your night out, bring along coping strategies, have an exit strategy just in case and moderate your drinking for your first time out. Have fun! Danielle ____________________ The SSC Support Team

Keep your guard up!!!!!!!! How long have you been quit? I hardly ever drink.....but I did go out the other night and had two beers. It didn't seem to bother me. But then... I had over 100 days going. I guess.... we have to chose not to smoke in all situations. We can't avoid them forever. But in the beginning you have to be careful until you are stonger. Hi Kathleen My advice is drink about half of what you would normally drink, not as fun but helps with cravings. If you feel like you need a cig really bad, step outside for a minute. Good Luck and make sure to update us My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/8/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 131 Amount Saved: $29.4 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 16 Mins: 18 Seconds: 47

Kathleen I just returned from a trip where I faced that situation...and more. What I did was prepare ahead of time. I had something to hold and chew on (the holder from a NRT cigarette), like a cut straw, had a list of self-talk phrases to remind me why I was quitting, and then while I was at dinner and other events, just enjoyed the heck out of not having to go out to smoke or worrying about my smoke bothering other people. Enjoy!!!! -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 54 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,188 Amount Saved: $367.2 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 12 Mins: 37 Seconds: 30

remind yourself that you can taste things in a whole new perspective...see what tastes different about your drink..focus on how it tastes....then take a deep breath....and enjoy your drink some more --- let us know how it went and what u did? Kathleen, You could try drinking something other than your usual. Maybe a glass of wine or differnt kind of beer. I was afraid the first time we had friends over after I quit but for some unknown reason I was fine. :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 55 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,113 Amount Saved: $357.5 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 17 Mins: 56 Seconds: 45
