Maxie: Hard truth time here...You can do with it as you wish. The sad fact is we are all stone cold junkies. We live or have lived with behavior patterns that function to inhibit our ability to become and remain healthy human beings. Some of us have had to learn to rework our emotional responses in order to function without resorting to the solace we imagine that nicotine gives us. In the end we must choose. We either recognize the lies that nicotine has told us and understand the damage it has done to our bodies or we remain with the weed and live a life engulfed in a cloudy nicotine dream. Sadly there is no third way. You can do this, it is not easy, but be assured that you can do this. If you smoke just a few you might as well just resign yourself to being a smoker. Maxie, It sounds like after the first few weeks, you're thinking "I've got this beat! I can smoke one here or there no problem!" Well, that IS a problem. You're letting your guard down and ol' Nic is right there to take advantage when you do. This is an all or nothing thing... you either smoke or you don't. If you're not ready to let go completely, then regroup and spend as much time reading about this addiction, looking at the disgusting pictures, posting here, making lists of the pros and cons of smoking and figure out what you want out of life... do you want to live as an addict for the rest of your life, wasting your money, time and health? Maxie, I know how you feel, several times I sat and cried and said, I don't want to fight this anymore!!! But then I realised that i was free, free of the tar and nicotine, free of the smell, free of the nicodemon and the fighting stopped and it got so much easier. At some point there has to be a decision as to whether you will smoke or not. You cannot be a non-smoker and still smoke. There's no way around that. We might have a quit meter here, but in your body is a smoke meter. It measures every cigarette. You can't have one and forget it like it never happened. Have you ever been on a diet? One where you wrote down everything and counted calories. You dutifully record every carrot stick and celery stalk, but not the doughnuts, ice cream and burger. When you get on the scale, your body did not forget to make an accurate record and you gained a few pounds. Same thing with smoking. The receptors in your brain accurately record every puff and use that record to increase and strengthen the cravings. The addiction takes out that much more insurance so that you will never quit. The act of slipping itself gets easier and easier. If no one sees you and you don't tell anyone, have you REALLY had a cigarette? Isn't it just as simple to start again the next day, or the next after that? Ultimately all you are doing is stretching out a long painful process into an even longer more painful process. The decision to quit is a hard one and a very brave one. It is not for the faint of heart. Realistically you know you will quit someday. You will quit when the doctor tells you it's a chance to save your life. You will quit when you can't breathe, when you cough to black-out, when you have that heart attack or stroke, or when you die. The only question is whether you will quit because it's your own decision or when it is made for you. There's no way round it. You have to decide and do it. It's hard. It maybe doesn't feel it's what you want but it obviously is and my opinion is that you re-set your meter and go through the process, with all the support of this site. Best of luck and speak soon. I have been fighting this battle for 2 years. Like my quit buddy, I've had to reset numerous times that....well....I'm tired of it. You answered your own question. Stop fighting. That is what I have done...stopped fighting. I don't smoke. PERIOD. There is no conversation, no discussion. Just DO IT! and BELIEVE that you have made the right decision. Never question it and it will be a lot easier.
