Hi armeewyf: I'm new to this Board, but have been on Chantix for one month and two days. I, too, was concerned about weight gain. I find that my appetite has actually decreased since being on the rx. I go to the gym 5-6 times a week (Body Pump and Body Step classes) and my endurance level has increased dramatically since becoming a non-smoker. I've also replaced chocolate with raw brocilli (yuck) and raw cauliflower (yuck) -- but I'm sorta getting used to it :) I made up my mind before starting the medication that if I gained weight, I'd just deal w/ it....that stopping smoking was more important. But, it hasn't been an issue at all. I've always been pretty careful about what I eat and now that I've stopped smoking, I pay really close attention. So far, so good. Since becoming a non-smoker, I've lost about 3 lbs. I'd definitely recommend an exercise program to anyone quitting. I think that helps at lot.

Since you are both relatively new and are using Chantix to quit, I thought we had a few things in common and wanted to introduce myself to you. My husband and I are both getting ready to begin Chantix. We actually have had the prescription since Feb 24 but he went out of town for 3 weeks and he returns this weekend. We agree it will be easier if we start this program together. I am appreciative of any suggestions you have. I am hoping that he will be open to starting this Sunday. However, I appreciate your comment on this one thing--we are planning to be on a cruise in April. I am not procrastinating BUT I do not want to get on a boat, get a drink and immediately want to smoke. I know he doesn't want to do the same. I smoke close to a pack a day and he smokes closer to 2 packs. We are the occasional vacation drinkers as this is the one time a year we de-stress without our 4 year old! Would you think that we would be better to go ahead and start now or to wait? I don't want to get on that boat and backslide. I also am concerned about weight gain. In the past few years I have lost 150 lbs on Medifast and occasionally take phentermine. My dr and pharmacist say that there is no study that shows any interaction between these 2 prescriptions. Has your hunger decreased with the Chantix? I have about 40 more lbs to lose to get to where I want to be. I want to say that I am so ready to stop smoking. I want the smell out of the house, the hair, the clothes...you know what I mean. I appreciate advise! I need it! So much thanks in advance!

Hi Lisa! Im taking Zyban, and Im not sure if these are a like but thats what happend for me. I took them 12 days before I stopped smoking, and after the first 7-8 days, cigs didnt taste so great. Infact, when I took a haul, I didn't get any satisfaction...i didnt physically crave it, so I was just taking a drag, putting it out, then relighting it and not getting any satisfaction. So when I did finally stop, it was a really easy transistion!! Im very confident I can remain smoke free!! Im actually scared about going off of it...but I still have lots of time to worry about that! :) Congrats on your decision to live longer!!! Another Chantix user here! I have to say that days 4-6 on chantix were the worst for me. It seems to have been the height of the nicotine withdrawal -- despite the fact that I was still smoking -- and the worst of the irritable, weepy, anxiety period. As other people have already said, the anxiety was worse than the quit. You'll still get cravings on chantix but they'll feel more like just thoughts instead of *needs*. Chantix has made all the difference in my quit and all I can say is it is unbelievable. There are quite a few Chantix users on here, some of them even already through the program and off the drug. Try searching "Chantix" under "search messages" and you'll find a LOT of messages of support. :) I'd wish you "good luck" but I think you're going to find that with the Chantix you don't even need "luck" -- your desire to quit is going to be enough. Lisa, I'm a Chantix user, almost done with it actually. Seems like all is happening for you as it should. These last couple of days only have the cigs that you feel you must, not the ones "because it is time". I needed some guidance with that one. Good Luck. You'll do it...if you want to. You still need much willpower. Armmeyf, Welcome to the SSC and congratulations to you and your husband on deciding to quit! Only you can decide what is best for you and your husband must do the same. Each quit is your own. Please start working through our online quit program. It will teach you what you need to know about quitting and help you get ready for your quit. As for the medication, you should know that many users have found it helpful in reducing cravings and the desire to smoke before their quit, however you should also keep in mind that it is an aid. You may still experience cravings and will likely experience withdrawal symptoms that are associated with other toxins found in cigarettes. Again, our quit program can help give you a better idea of what to expect. If your concerned about weight gain, you can use our online quit program to help you put together a plan to prevent it. Some examples include, increasing your level of physical activity as well as making healthy choices and reserving junk food as rewards. Hope this helps. Lisa - I'm using Chantix too, and it has been incredibly helpful. By the time Day #8 on Chantix & my quit day came around, I was ready. In fact, the anticipation of the quit in the days before was worse than the quit itself. My anxiety actually went down when that day finally arrived. So, use these last few days to: (1)stock up on sugarless candy/gum, water, carrots & other veggies, etc. (2)read a ton of posts on this site (3) work the program on the left (4) make a to-do list so you'll be prepared to distract yourself & keep busy. I was terrified to quit - both dreading the loss & fearing failure. I truly didn't think I could do it, but I have. Today is my 19th Day as a Non-Smoker! You can do it too!!!
