Triggers

My biggest trigger is the telephone. Its always been pretty loud in my house, so when someone calls, or I call someone, I used to go out for a smoke. I smoked on the small deck off the dining room, and now, whenever I'm upstairs, I can see my "smoking haven". Needless to say, I'm spending a lot more time in my basement. Its actually a good thing, b/c we just moved here in nov. and still have quite of boxes to get to in the basement. :) And the kitchen/lounge/bedrooms..ect. stay TIDY!! Now that the weather is getting sooo nice... Instead taking and making phone calls my "smoking haven" I sit in the bench swing, thats outside another door. And grab a drink of some kind....Then both of my hands are being used, and I don't think of it so much.. Major triggers? Yeah, I have to stop getting up in the morning. :) Seriously... the computer. But I'm biting the bullet on that one. I'm learning to adjust because I'm not giving up the computer! I drink much less coffee, I watch more TV...because I didn't watch much as a smoker...so I don't identify watching TV with smoking...not as much anyway. I have so many triggers because I associate almost everything with smoking...except work. I'm a teacher... so obviously there's little or no opportunity to smoke at work. I didn't smoke in the shower, or in the bathroom for that matter. I haven't smoked in the car for the last 6 months or so. But just about everything else is a potential trigger. I find that I'm doing things at odd times... times I wouldn't ordinarily do them. Another thing is that I'm engaging my kids more often. I'm also more inclined to just get up and take a trip to the store or to Blockbuster...just so that I have something different to focus on. My largest trigger is alcohol, but I quit drinking some time ago... so that shouldn't be a danger.

Yup, the phone is a trigger for me too. I would usually light up when the phone rang just in case it was a lengthy call. So now I have a craving whenever I hear a bell. Pavlov's dogs have nothing on me. :)

OK, Bobbi, but I think that most of the changes happen in the short term to thwart cravings. I'm sure that over the long-run my life will be quite similiar to what it is now. I'm definately going to be adding some exercise and fresh-air. For one thing I've probably put 5 lbs on in the last week, and that has to come off again. But first things first. The weight can be dealt with later.

Hey lookingglass, When I read your post it was like I wrote it everything in my life is a trigger, as I have smoked for 50 years SO I should be so busy trying to find subs. for all the things that cause triggers I should never have the withdraws, yeah right lol lol. We can do it!!!!!!!!! Let me know if you find things to change from what you did to what you do now. and I will do the same. my q-date is 3/27. Thanks, Bobbi

Another big one is driving home from work. Hey Jnine, You make perfect sense! This past saturday was quite beautiful here as well...I think it got to about 60. I was having major cravings...I used to love going out when it was just starting to get warm for a smoke. So I went outside so I could do it for the first time smoke free. I could breathe better, smell better, and not get so out of breathe from taking a power walk. I was focusing on how "new" everything has become to me. That definitely helped to push those negative thoughts away. The sky was so blue and the air was crisp with the smell of the forth coming spring...I wish I could bottle that smell and carry it with me every day! I actually have a friend who has quit...he is on month number 6 and he got a craving this weekend for the first time in months. He went to get coffee and when he stepped outside and it was warm, it triggered....then he pushed the thought away. I am finding that there will be suprise triggers. Like the warm day. It was cold when I quit, so the warm weather kind of gave me some suprise cravings. I have a feeling for the next year or so, suprise cravings will come up....does that make any sense? Has anyone else noticed "suprise" triggers? Your stats are awesome jnine....keep 'em kickin'!!! jnine It make sense. But so far I havent been able to change much, my triggers are mainly linked to indispensable things, like eating, working, social gathering, etc. The odd thing is that day after day theyre becoming less frequent though stronger and thanks God I dont crave for smoking. I crave for I dont know what! :) Stay strong, mitri My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/4/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 36 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 181 Amount Saved: $36 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 23 Mins: 55 Seconds: 39

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

17 years ago 0 247 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Lets talk about triggers that make you want to smoke. Today was the nicest day we have had so far. I think it hit 58 today. That was a big trigger for me. I always smoked outside. It has been 56 days but I thought about smoking alot. The urge was only about a 2 crave but still I keep thinking about how I used to sit outside and smoke. So I took the dog for a walk. Then I picked up sticks and leaves left from the winter, I just kept myself busy. I made it without a sweat but somepeople might think that if they think about it more than 5 minutes they can't make it. But you can make it just do something else instead of what you always did before. Make a new habit to take the place of the old one. Does this make sense to anyone? Does anyone else have big triggers they have to change there old behavors about?
