want to quit smoking for good

PattyMagic, I'm in my 11th Day of my Quit. The first three days were pretty wild but, YOU can do it and we're here to help you. Stock up on hard candy, gum, sunflower seeds, straws, toothpicks, etc. for that "hand to mouth" thing. Have plenty of distractions lined up to do during each craving like...Go wash your hair, clean something in the house, take a walk, and things like that. Drink lots and lots and lots of water to flush your system and for some reason, the water helps with the cravings. Breathe in through your nose slowly and slowly exhale through your mouth during a craving. Post, post, post and read, read, read a lot. Okay? Keep us posted and we're all here for you. You CAN do this. Hugs, Tutti PS Work those tools over to the left too. They really, really help. Patty, You CAN do this and we're all here to help you. This is site is wonderful....like a community of folks who are just now become NON SMOKERS and others who are farther down the road. But either way, we all know what it feels like to quit and we all support and encourage each other. Patty, start drinking lots and lots of water. It flushes your system and helps with the cravings. Get your goodie basket ready for that "Hand to Mouth" thing. I'm diabetic so I have to use sugar free candies. Others use raw veggies and things like that. Get plenty of gum, toothpicks, straws, sunflower seeds, peanuts, or whatever YOU want to use. I had to get a lot of stuff because I get bored with just one or two things. Then, when a craving hits, drink lots of water and have your goodies ready. With each craving, get up and move around, inhale deeply through the nose and exhale out through the mouth, say a prayer asking for strength, etc. Make sure you get rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays. Get rid of the cigarette smell as much as you can. Use candles, incense, etc. Prepare your house/car, get your goodies ready, your water, practice your breathing, and post, post, post. Talk to us, we're here for you and read as many posts as you can. Work the tools under Quit Program Tools on the left. You can do this and we're here for you. Patty: I know you can do this...I know you are afraid, we are all or were afraid until we went a ways down the road and realized one plain truth, we don't have to smoke now, we never had to smoke in the past and we will never have to smoke in the future. Thats the deal... This will be evident to you in the near future, what you need to do now is have a plan. Learn all that you can about how the addiction works. Our addiction tells us on a daily basis that we have to stay addicted or else...Did you ever ask yourself what the or else part is? Could it possibly be that you better keep sucking down the smoke or you won't die, or you will have much more money in your pocket, or your circulation will improve, or you will stand a better chance of not suffering a debilitating disease in later life or you will have better skin or on and on and on...The bottom line is there is no down side to stopping there is only gain and positive things... The reason that you feel uncomfortable when you stop smoking is that the addiction feels itself dying and will yell and scream to be given more life. Once you realize that you have the power to tell this thing no, you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago...Never forget that nicotine warps our perceptions...It is not classified as a psychotropic drug, but from my perspective it sure does have the power to alter one's perceptions...Its not your friend, and it never has been... Try to replace the fear with knowlege. Read and understand what is going on in the body when our mind tells us that we just have to have a cigarette. Drink and drink and drink and drink water...all you can...there is a connection between H2O and getting craves...I can't explain it to you, but I have 28 bottles in the back seat of my car at all times...and believe me, I drink as many as I can... Above all else, this is a very personal and at times an emotional journey...You may grieve, you may be angry, you may feel like a bobble head doll as the addiction leaves you. However all of these states of being are temporary and you pass through them...The most important element in all of this is YOU...You must have a greater desire to stop than you do to smoke...It is the only way to do this...Half hearted measures will not work...

Hi pattymagic, Welcome !! One more tip about the weight. Don't worry a whole lot about gaining weight in the beginning...we can work on that later... ;) Quitting smoking...is a life and death situation and does take Priority over being a little chubby. It's more intense psychologically than losing weight. Some Quitters actually lose weight with their new found activities replacing their old sedentary smoking activities! Hang in there patty! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 59 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,969 Amount Saved: $280.25 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 4 Mins: 7 Seconds: 20

Pattymagic, You have hit the nail on the head! One day at a time is the only way to go. In fact if need be, one crave at a time, one hour at a time. And the time does pass. Hang in there because I can HONESTLY tell you it does get better with time. These feelings associated with not smoking are only temporary and they will pass. I think we've all said when we've just quit, "OMG, I can't live my life like this." The good news is, you won't. Time is the greatest healer there is. Keep that quit going strong, Cheers, Jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/13/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 52 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,581 Amount Saved: $468 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 22 Mins: 13 Seconds: 32

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Patty - Brace yourself, this is want you'll be missing out on as a non-smoker: *You won't get to reek of cigarettes anymore *You won't be able to spend all of your spare money on smokes *You won't be pre-occuppied all of the time by planning your next smoke. *Parents won't keep their children away from you. *You won't be hacking & coughing anymore (and it was so attractive) *Your hair and skin won't be dull/lifeless. *Your teeth won't stay as yellow *You won't have those moments of frantically searching your purse, pockets, etc. for a lighter/matches. *Your friends/family won't be begging you to quit anymore *Your insurance costs won't be as high *You won't get lectured by your doctor, dentist, etc. *You won't have the fun of huffing for breath when you walk/exercise *Your house/car/apartment won't have that lingering smoke scent all of the time (even with the air fresheners we try to use). If you can live without all of the above, then I guess the non-smoking thing just might work out! :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/24/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 295 Amount Saved: $58.5 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 19 Mins: 51 Seconds: 26

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

I have a friend who smokes to keep her weight down. She found a small growth in her throat and has been afraid to go to the doctor to have it diagnosed because it might be cancer and she will have to quit smoking and is still afraid that her weight will go up. She is choosing to die. The growth may be benign, she'll never know. Instead of quitting, joining a gym or taking the dog for a run, she made out her Will. It is like holding a pistol to your head playing Russian Roulette. If not this time, next time, or the time after that.
