nsgirl, I forgot to tell you...I've had to go "cold turkey" too. I couldn't use the gum, patches, lozenges or any of those because I'm diabetic. What counts is that we all quit. However we do it. nsgirl, You hang in there. I cried when I quit and then got mad at myself for crying. LOL I did just what you did too and I posted on this site and found out that others cried too. It will get better, I promise. The first three days are the worst. Those are the days that your body is really withdrawing from nicotine. After that, it's still work but you'll see that it gets easier with each passing day. Drink lots and lots of water. I mean so much water that you're sick of it. It helps with those cravings and helpt to flush those poisons out of your system. It's weird that it helps with the cravings but it really, really does. Do some deep breathing each time you get hit with cravings or withdrawal symptoms. In deep and slowly through your nose and exhale slowly through the mouth. Have hard candy, gum, toothpicks, straws, sunflower seeds, etc. for that "hand to mouth" thing. Every time you get hit with a craving, get up and do something different like, brush your teeth, clean something in the house, take a quick walk, or come to this site and post or read. Keep yourself distracted. Oh, and if you feel like crying, go ahead and cry. You're blowing off steam and, I've read on this site that crying also helps with cleaning out your system. You'll find that certain things, places, or times of day will make you crave more for a cigarette. Try to avoid those things here at the beginning or change them up. Like if you were having a cigarette with coffee in the mornings, have a diet soda or tea instead. If you smoked while your on the computer, clean your desk and put a candle where the ashtray was and some pictures of your babies around you. Things like that. Just avoid those triggers or change 'em up the best you can. Please keep us posted on how you're doing. Read, read, read and post a lot. Ask lots of questions if you have them and vent all that you want or need to. We're here for you, okay. Oh yea, I was like Rainie too. The first day of my quit, my cough was gone. History. Let's see if we can't get rid of yours too. We're with you. nsgirl, How's it going? We're here with you and so proud of you. Keep drinking that water. Okay? I mean so much that you slosh when you walk. ha ha ha Gross, I read about how water helps. It not only helps with those cravings but, it flushes out your throat, sinuses, esophagus, and lungs too. I have so many kinds of gum here right now it's funny. Not only gum but candy too and a bunch of other stuff. Don't let yourself get bored with the same thing. Have a stockpile of different stuff to nibble or chew on. Okay? Let us hear from you. You CAN do this. nsgirl Embrace your tears, they are signs of healing, be glad that you can cry...It means only that you can still feel and that is the essential nature of being a human being... You are going through a great many physical and mental changes as your body and soul return to the natural state that nicotine has stolen from you. Be glad that you have made this decision. Be happy and learn learn learn all you can about the physiology and emotional consequences of smoking...The good news is...YOU CAN DO THIS...Stay close there are many people here who will invest in your progress... And remember to drink lots and lots of water, it is an essential part of the process... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 68 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,637 Amount Saved: $476 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 16 Mins: 10 Seconds: 59
