Welcome, Sher -- I'm also a 35-year smoker, now a Chantix quitter. I'm also a grandma and happy to be a nonsmoking grandma, to boot! Chantix is SO helpful in getting through the early part of the quit, as long as you keep reading and learning about the addiction itself and preparing yourself constantly in how to conquer it.
I WAS a little concerned when I first got off the Chantix -- for about 2 weeks, I felt SO strange, so edgy, but I still didn't want to smoke.
That's the key, you know, in knocking back what you call "stinkin' thinkin'" (I LOVE that, by the way). You have to keep it on the positive side -- the WHY you're now a nonsmoker, the TOTAL LACK of anything positive about being a smoker.
After a couple of rather strange weeks off the Chantix, I was fine and feeling like a perfectly normal NONSMOKER! Whoo hoooooooo!!!
The "stinkin' thinkin'" is the addiction, the junkie in you trying to lure you back. Smack it back HARD and remind yourself that smoking is not an option.
That's what I do -- well, smoking isn't an option, so I'll have to deal with how I'm feeling at this moment in some other way. So far, it's ALWAYS worked.
Stay positive -- and knock that "stinkin' thinkin'" out the door!
Keep the faith and that great quit -- holler if you need any help!
