Rant:: Is my family to blame??

17 years ago 0 43 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I come from a long line of smokers... My mother smokes, my father smokes, my stepfather smokes, my grandmother smokes, my aunts smoke..I could go on and on.... I grew up in a smoking household. And when we visited family, or friends they were smoking households too. My fondest memories was when we stayed at my grandparents house, later then usual, and I got to stay up and watch all the adults play euchure and have a couple drinks listening to oldies. I found it amusing if someone was getting tipsy..All the while sitting on my grampy's lap, while he had his hands full of cards, and a cigarette hanging out the side of his mouth. Fanning infront of your face to get the smoke out of your eyes was somthing I did, not even thinking about it. I remember complaning to my mother when we went on long drives about the smoke in the car. A little later in life, I remember looking up to women who smoked...They looked so sexy, and mature, and...well everything I wanted to be when I grew up. That clip of Olivia Newton John, at then end of Grease with thoes black spandex. ...(spandex!!!! OMG!!! LOL) and she was smoking...she looked HOT!! I watched all my family have babies, and still continue to smoke while pregnant. Nothing bad ever happend to the babies, all my cousins were very healthy babies.(I am the oldest of all 11 of my cousins) Ive never known my mother or father to try and quit smoking, actually only 2 of my family members have quit. It was almost like the norm for adults, and I really think I already knew, back then, I would be a smoker. The first cigarette I ever smoked was my mothers... I was probably 13 years old. My mother had just left my father and we moved out of the city. She still worked in the city, so she had an 1hr 30min commute...She left at like 6 am to make it on time for work. So I had to get myself up and ready by myself. My mother always butted out her (what i like to call them) Bi**h sticks, and there was almost ALWAYS more then half left over. Now that I think back, I was in a new school, and wanted to be cool...a rebel ...i liked the sound of that "look" Guys liked that type of girl too... So I kept on taking her butts, not all of them at a time, but once and a while. I got caught with cigarettes a few months

MomMom: I smoke through both of my pregnancies too... Both of my kids were around 6 1/2 lbs..nice deliveries, except... My daughter (my youngest) was born with a tumor on her thigh...Its was the size of a golfball, and thats pretty huge on a 6 lb baby! I beat myself up over and over because of this. I Couldnt take it anymore, so I talked to my doctor about why this happend to her, is it because I smoked?? He told me that a lot of things could have happend b/c i smoked through the pregnancy, but this was not one of them. Even though I got this info from a Medical Professional, it still didnt make me feel any better. Im happy to say, it was removed asap, and she has been "cancer free" for over a year now! Just goes to show you, just b/c everyone elses pregnancies were ok..doesn't mean mine would be. I really think this is the reason I quit...I didnt want to do anymore harm to my Precious children! Rainie: I actually didn't wear spandex...but i did have a pair of "mc Hammer" pants lol~!! Hemp - you are telling my story! I relate to many of your posts. Do you think we are related? No, my family didn't play euchre! I smoked thru my pregnancies (2 of them) and my babies were okay. I was lucky. They are both adults, and both smoke, although one is quitting with me and the other smokes only a pack per week. (but that is still smoking) Nothing bad happened to me because I smoked, so why did I quit? I ask myself the same question. I want to quit. I am starting to understand what the "Freedom" is. I'm not there yet, but day by day I get closer to freedom. You know what? I like it! I like it more than I liked smoking....and I really liked smoking! We can do this, we want to do this, and we will be successful. Break the family chain! Set a good example. Mom's butts got us started, right? How would you feel if you found your kids smoking yours? (Mine couldn't, I smoked them ALL the way down to the filter!) NOPE! It wasn't that long ago that they had ashtrays in the banks and the stores, in the hallways at motels and everybody smoked everywhere. As awareness grows, things change. If you were growing up in this era, your parents quite likely would smoke outside. There are probably a million different reasons why each of us chose to smoke. The most important thing is that we're all here now, making a choice to quit. Yep - similar story here too. They ALL smoked. Neither my sister nor I did until I was 21 - what an eejit! I smoked through both pregnancies - and sometimes, given that they were both breech and both over 8.5 pounds, I've actually wondered just how big they might have been. Eeeeeek. Neither of my kids have ever smoked - well, so far, but I am hopeful they never will. My dad smoked from he was a wee boy and died at 52 when I was about 14. Can't say I've really ever blamed him for it, more wondered if he'd still be here - well, certainly we'd have had more years together most likely, if he hadn't smoked. My "thing" about my family of smokers is weirder, I feel as if somehow I'm criticising them by stopping. You know, no longer following in my beloved father's footsteps. Go figure! Hi, Don't blame your mother too much, she didn't know any better. When I was young my parents smoked and my brothers and sister started to smoke at about 15 or so. At that time not many people knew how smoking could kill people and all the bad stuff that was in a cigaret. That's all in the past. You can just go on and love your mother and don't be angry at her or the rest of the family. You quit smoking for yourself and for your childeren. You are doing the right thing. Tell your kids how bad smoking is and maybe they will never start. Hang in there for now and don't think about earlier days. That days are gone with all the good things and the bad things aswell. You are a great quitter and I bet your kids are proud of you.
