Closet Smoker finally quitting

Hi freemom and welcome to the best site on the internet for support!! You have been reading the posts and this is your best defense of what you are about to face in your quit. Find Jacko's long post on just what we nicotine addicts are about, HE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS!! (Help Josie, can you find this one for us?) I am a 56 yr-old Grandma who quit cold-turkey for 10 years and went back like a fool after a divorce and menopause was setting in. My best advice to you...be honest with "yourself" and face your triggers for what they are. auntdeb My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 32 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,623 Amount Saved: $152 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 11 Mins: 17 Seconds: 22

Welcome Freemom: (This is actually my second welcome to you, as I did so -- with chocolate and wine -- on the Magic Ship thread.) I can't imagine how you and the others here managed to be closet smokers. Since I quit, I can smell a smoker from 50 feet! Of course, maybe it's because I'm still a new quitter with a nose that's actually working again. Perhaps that sensitivity will quiet some. It just seems to me now that if my husband quit (which he says he will do very soon), then started sneaking them again, there's no way he could hide that from me! At any rate, congratulations to you all for making such a great decision to join the growing ranks of nonsmokers! We'll help get you there -- just ask. Keep the faith -- and your baby quits (must protect your baby quits) My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 117 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,708 Amount Saved: $936 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 9 Mins: 26 Seconds: 26

freemom, I know what you mean, I have two elementary aged boys. Whenever I had a minute, like they would go for a bike ride or a walk with dad or put a movie in or start a video game - I'd book it to the back yard. Anytime I found myself suddenly alone I would catch myself calculating how much time I had. I also made up excuses to get in the car and go to the store or down the street. It is really pitiful, isn't it? I felt like a vagrant. When I first quit I tried to make sure that I wasn't alone, I went on the bike ride or walks or sat in the same room during the movie. Now I can be alone w/o craving. That day will come for you. Your making the right move. Welcome. My husband and I were avid and open smokers. Then we decided to quit on May 23. He did SOOOO well (8 months now). I did too-for about 70 days. Then I started sneaking around smoking, cuz I didn't want to drag him down with me. I would smoke, use body spray, alcohol hand cleaner, mouthwash, etc...before coming in. One day he came up to me as soon as I walked in and started 'sniffing me'. I thought my secret was out! :8o: Then he said 'Have you been drinking?' LOL All that mouthwash and hand clenser and I smelled like a liqour store! I came clean and started my quit again...here I am! (Thank you, Chantix!) Freemom, Welcome to the SSC and congratulations on quitting! Please start working through our online quit program. It is a great educational ressource and cna help you put together a plan to tackle those cravings. Start looking at the reasons for your smoking? Was it mostly a physical need or did you just need a few minutes to yourself? Or both? Danielle ___________________________ The SSC Support Team

Welcome freemom..great name Wow, I could not hide my smoking from my family. But, I'm sure if too much time went by, you had to make excuses to be alone somehow. Or, if the family was doing some activity all together, you would have some "other" thing to do so you could be alone and smoke? Look how it controlled your life, how it made you sneaky and secretive. There are some other closet smokers on this site; hopefully they will be along soon. But, I would say that you should try and be around people as much as you can in the upcoming weeks. Spend time at the library? or browse antique shops? or be in the same room with your kids at all hours (they will LOVE that). Play some board games with them or watch movies together...avoid sneaking off out of habit. My point, think of ways to be with people. Congratulations on making this decision. Read, post, do the online program and educate yourself about the healing process from nicotine addiction.
