I heard about this site from my mom. I quit on Valentines' Day, and did great for a week. Then last night I smoked. I was out with friends, and that wasn't really the problem. The problem was that my allergies have become so severe the last couple of days. Funny thing is, I'm a nurse, and even I can't figure it out...could it be that since my senses are returning to normal, my sensitivity to allergy triggers could be heightened? Anyway, I'm planning to see a doctor about the allergies to hopefully try yet another new medication...I really don't want to turn to cigarettes as an allergy remedy!

Oh, well, I was a smoker long before I was a nurse. But yes, it was kind of hypocritical to tell my patients to quit when I was leaving them and going for a smoke break! I'm not really having a rough time with it, I was hoping the cigarettes last night would dull everything down for me and not have my eyes and nose running like leaky pipes. Seemed to work for a bit. Now, if I can just get my husband on here... Welcome Nurse29! Your mother was right, this is the place for support and to have all of your questions addressed by those who have been there and done that. So you had a little slip...it happens! Don't let it interrupt your quit! Read much and post often, it really helps. MomMom PS I know your mother well, what a lovely non-smoking woman she is! Welcome Nurse29! Congratulations on your decision to quit. Yippeeee, we're so glad you are here!!!! Your MomMom is special to us, but we have tons of room for you in our hearts too and every person's quit is their very own so we'll be here for both of you plus your husband should he decide to join us in our journey. :) :) In case no one has told you yet, head straight to your program tools on the left and start getting prepared for your journey to the Land of Quit. The freedom there is so worth the time and effort it takes to get there. We all look forward to seeing our quit meters and how far we've come each and every day. My best advice is to READ...you're a nurse so you know that knowledge replaces fear and education is the key to knowing where and when and how to place the medicine and do the therapy for a sucessful recovery. Just when you think you understand it all...read it again and again to reinforce it and to prevent active flare ups...this addiction will go into remission and as soon as we think we've got it beat, it will sneak out of nowhere and pounce on us again. Your allergies were probably masked by the chemical reaction our bodies can have to smoking and are not made any better whatsoever by putting poision into your lungs...that's just the insiduous nature of this life-killing addiction...it lies to us at every turn and pretends to be everything it is not. See your doctor...he will know how to really make your allergies feel better. Ok...your Mom has some friends here who JUST LOVE TO HAVE FUN while we kick some major ash around here!!! She'll point us out to you and we hope you'll hop on board and sail with us. Hope to see you soon! cigarettes for allergies. creative. as smokers, some of us have cigarettes registered in our brains as the answer for any situation we face - boredom, anger, anxiety, celebration, socialization, depression, etc. etc. etc. let's start by searching for a new answer. At least drop this one as an answer. It may take a while to find a satisfactory replacement. but that's what we're here for - to support you along the way. come on - let's go! Welcome, Nurse! Nice to have you here -- especially when certain of us might need a "shot" of something! So sorry you're having such a struggle -- just goes to show that addiction has nothing to do with common sense, huh? I'm sure that if you hang out here, you'll find lots of help and support. peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 115 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,767 Amount Saved: $632.5 Life Gained: Days: 21 Hrs: 1 Mins: 37 Seconds: 58

You really dont realise how bad it smells until you are there. I was in a child protection conference with social services the other day. I was advocat for parents. When the mother said - I really must leave a minute to use the Loo. She came back 5 mins later and was stinking of tobacco. I now know i was fooling nobody but myself. Well done for quitting! Nurse29, Welcome to the SSC and congratulations on deciding to quit. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the tools of the program. They will teach you what you need to know about quitting. With regards to your question, your heightened sense of smell may be overwhelming another part of this sense; the chemical sense which is responsible for stimulating the nerve endings in our eyes, nose, mouth and throat. These nerve endings are responsible for feeling smells. Ex: When your eyes water from the smell of an onion. Consult your doctor, he/she is the best authority to make this distinction.
