Screwed up on my first day!

Smoked1- I had 24 years of puffing under my belt and am in the fight for my life now. No one said it was going to be easy, in fact everyone in the world knows how hard it is to quit. Instead of having a smoke with your lady tonight when you get home...leave. Go to the store and buy a scratch off lotto ticket or a bottle of soda, something. Go for a walk, smoking won't work anymore! Smoked1, Hang in there guy. You realize your girl is feeling guilty? (Sure she is, the same way my husband feels) They want to quit...but we "cannot choose for them".It has to be their decision... when... "it's Their Time to Quit". Be thankful she is smoking outside "for you", I know I am thankful that my husband goes outside. As I lay in bed next to my man at night, I hear him wheezing and struggling for air (he was diagnosed with Emphysema 14 years ago and had a Quad-Bi-Pass on his heart 10 yrs ago). He tells me that he can quit anytime (as long as it's his idea). I'm still waiting for him to quit, but decided that "It is my time NOW"!! :eg: NOPE AUNTDEB My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 17 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 824 Amount Saved: $82.79 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 9 Mins: 57 Seconds: 42

Hi, smoked: Hope you've gotten this far; I'm on day one again, and what I hope will stop me from lighting up that first one this time is a combo of: reading here for tips and inspiration, and following those tips; remembering that I really do want to quit more than I want to smoke; taking the time to listen to the relaxation tape; trying to keep in mind that slogan "one day at a time," and the acronym NOPE (not one puff ever). I know procrastination is a big problem for me, and looking back at my quit failures I think that I've always picked up that cigarette because in part of my brain I think: "oh, well, I'll just quit again tomorrow or the next day", so this time I'm going to try to catch myself at that moment and remind myself that I WANT TO QUIT NOW. Good luck to all of us! lladro

One would wish that she would quit, but she is she and you are you. There are a fair amount of people on this site and elsewhere who struggle with family and friends and co-workers who continue to smoke. She is going outside and I didn't catch how else she may be trying to be supportive. I just want this to work for you and make sure that you don't try to project anything onto her. Sometimes when we quit we can get very angry and sometimes I know that when I'm angry I don't always think things through. You can't make her quit. The best you can do is focus on boundaries and be a role model. Cigarettes Not Smoked

It's always hard to get started with anything new, isn't it? I used to find myself delaying things like this, too. If you live with a smoker, it does make things more difficult. Sounds to me like you need to reinforce your reasons for quitting. Make a list as long as your arm and look at that list before you reach for the ciggies. Focus on the first three days - once you see your quit meter moving along, your resolve will get stronger. Good luck, Smoked - we all know how difficult this thing is!
