Thanks everyone. I am feeling better today. I have decided that instead of feeling sad for her, I must show her the good things that come from quitting. I will encourage her, and be there for her if she decides to quit. Thanks again for your support. Just have a question for everyone. I am experiencing a sort of sadness. Not for myself. I feel really sad for my mother, who is a smoker. It is so strange, but I almost feel like I have deserted her or something, by quitting while she continues to smoke. I know she wants to quit, but I guess right now is just not the time for her. Has anyone else experienced these types of feelings? For one very brief moment, I felt like going back to smoking would make things ok. The same as they used to be. Like I somehow wouldn't be leaving her behind. I did not give in, but the sadness for her still remains. Any suggestions? Thank you all so much for all the help, suggestions, examples and laughs. I need them all. Hi Taylor, I'd like to say that sometimes when you are feeling like going back to smoking "like I somehow wouldn't be leaving her behind" or because "I almost feel like I have deserted her or something", it's the addiction talking to you and trying to convince you to come back to feeding the addiction instead of forging ahead with a newfound freedom. Think about how much time we spent rationalizing our addiction, and I think you will see this particular incident as another form of rationalization. I don't believe that you would give her any sort of comfort if you went back to smoking, and in fact I will venture to say she is watching you to see how you do, and may indeed follow in your footsteps. Just my opinion, take what you like and leave the rest, Denise My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 46 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,405 Amount Saved: $345 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 11 Mins: 14 Seconds: 34

Good job Taylor - I felt that guilt too especially with some of the people that I was close to ... I remember feeling deserted when my friends kept quitting one by one until I was left standing outside by myself. Now that we are quitting, it kind of feels like we are abandoning a sinking ship. However, if I didn't have the benefit of hearing the stories and seeing people who have successfully quit, I wouldn't be here today. Hopefully the right time will come for you Mom too. Taylor, I know excatly what you feel. My hubby smokes. I went threw sadness, then anger, and then acceptance. It still upsets me and sometimes I still get sad. What you need to remember is this is your quit and life. You must protect them both. Be strong and be the role model. Who knows she may come around and then look to you for support. You can do this, we will be here to help. You are doing the best thing for yourself, protect your quit at all cost. Yes. I did. When I found out my cousin had mouth and lip cancer. I told him back in July to quit. He laughed at me and said he wouldnt quit. I actually have no emotion over it. None. I do not feel guilty at all either. I was sad for about 2 days and then I got over it. I have this inner peace. Taylor726, As you can see you're not alone. Challenge those sad thoughts. You haven't left her behind, you're leading the way. If she decides to follow, you'll be able to be there for her and be her pillar of strength. Feel better soon. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

knowledge is a powerfull thing, when it comes to quitting the ciggs. It's unfortunate that smokers lack it, just as we did. what to do ...?, we can't preach, just offer support. Dealing with smoking family memebers is a hard thing, i've had to learnt to just let it be. You are grieving over the loss of your junky friend.....sympathizing with smokers is part of it...anger is part of it....sadness too. Just don't let the junky take you to the point where HE takes over your actions katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1793 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 71,733 Amount Saved: $10220.1 Life Gained: Days: 233 Hrs: 21 Mins: 57 Seconds: 38
