Cutting Back Before Quit Date

17 years ago 0 2830 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Erika, Welcome to the SSC. Yes, I think cutting back is a good way to PREPARE to quit. Some people think that cutting back IS quitting and that's where the danger lies because it's NOT quitting... it's a way to PREPARE to quit and it sounds like you understand that. So as long as this is just a method that you plan to use to get ready for your quit, then it's excellent! I personally couldn't do it. Each time I tried, I ended up smoking the same amount or more each day. The only way for me was to quit and be done with them. I bumped a post in this forum called "frequently asked questions" that you might want to take a look at. It has some information that could also help you prepare for your quit. Congrats on making the decision to finally end this addiction! Welcome! Crave the Quit! I never had any luck with fading. This last time I smoked like crazy right up until my quit. Make sure you throw ALL smokes and smoking materials out. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 70 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,531 Amount Saved: $560 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 6 Mins: 21 Seconds: 36

Erica, I reduced my daily smoke count from 20 to about 8 a day a week prior to my quit. I had just started Zyban. I did this 1) as a message to myself that this was really "the final quit" and 2)to give myself some confidence that I could overcome the cravings. Your smoke log you are starting will help you identify which ones you can start to eliminate. You will also boost your quit confidence by working on your glove compartment (to the left). Don't be nervous, feed that determination kindling in you. Hang out here alot and you will receive lots of support and encouragement. Good luck! Hi Erika and welcome to the SSC, I've not had any personal experience in cutting back nor with taking Wellbutrin. I have read some posts in the past on this subject. Some seemed to do ok with cutting back while others talked of it keeping them in a steady, aggitated state of withdrawal. If you'd be interested in reading more, you can try the search feature here on the site. There may be some others with experience that will post soon. The program and support here is excellent so definitely take advantage of it! Make this site a part of your daily routine for a while. Educate yourself as much as you can. You'll be prepared and we'll be ready to lend a hand. You can do this... Congratulations on a great decision! Looking forward to seeing you on the forum :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 653 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,073 Amount Saved: $2331.21 Life Gained: Days: 69 Hrs: 5 Mins: 1 Seconds: 36

I can't see how it hurts to cut back. Be sure to use the quit program tools over on the left...they will help you decide what's best for your quit. Good luck! Erika....personally, I never could cut back...the harder I tried to not smoke, the worse the monster screamed for one. It was like constant torment of the worst kind. I had a terrible time coming to grips with my addiction and finally taking the plunge to stop. I used the patches and the first couple of weeks were as they say, "hell" I don't think I could have made it cold turkey, I admire people that can tough it through that. but then, using aids is no disgrace...we are all fighting for the same thing...some people can do it by knockout and others have to go several rounds to win. If cutting back works, it certainly doesn't hurt. Just get your mind set....you have to want to quit, worse than you want to smoke. Don't think of it as a forever, sentence of some sort thing.....Just "choose" to not smoke and do it day by day till you have a firm grip on it. then promise yourself that you will NOT let go, no matter what! and set up a reward program......be GOOD to yourself....KNOW that you can be a winner!
