Cutting Back Before Quit Date

17 years ago 0 204 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello Ericka If you feel you need to cut back, then do what you have to do. For me, it didnt work. It was more tourture that anything. But I got pissed off at cigs! I think thats whats keeping me focused. Keep the bad things about smoking in your mind, then keep the good things about smoking in your mind! Watch how the pendumlum swings! Good luck, I will be praying for you ! To everyone who has responded to my post, You guys are fabulous. I really feel like I have a support system in place. It is great. I know it is going to be hard but I am so determined to get rid of these cancer sticks that I'll do anything to quit. So far today I've smoked 12 cigarets which is pretty good for me (since my normal amount is probably 30-35.. I was ranked as an "8" for quitting). I'm about to go out to dinner with my daughter and won't smoke then because we'll sit in non-smoking. I'm still nervous that I won't be able to do it yet at the same time, I am so determined. I know my husband isn't ready yet (we just talked about it - he is away on a business trip) but I've got to do this for myself and for my children. Thank you so much for all of your support. I hope that someday I will be a complete NON-SMOKER and I can help people who are planning to quit and quitting. I love the support. I know I couldn't even consider this without this group. It has helped sooooo much. I plan to throw all of my smoking materials away. My husband also smokes but fortunately he smokes cigars which I have no desire to smoke. Also, we don't smoke in the house. Thanks for the advice. Hi to all. I've recently joined this group and set my quit date for November 30. I'm taking Wellbutrin and hopefully this will help. I'm curious if it is a good idea to cut back on the number of cigarets you smoke each before your quit date. I'm ashamed to say that I smoke about 30 cigarets a day. Today I've been keeping a log and have only had 6 so far. Has anyone tried cutting back before the quit date? Help! I am nervous about this - I don't want to disappoint my children or myself. I'm determined though - this is the strongest I've ever felt about quitting. I really like reading all of your posts. You are such a supportive group. Thanks. Hi Erika, I`m on zyban and I found that I brought my quit date forward as I prepared same as you have. The more into the course I went, the less smoking I wanted to do so I just stopped. I smoked a lot of cigs a day for 30 years-sometimes I have smoked 4 packs in one day- That is Disgusting-terrible. Gonna fight this demon to the death So Can You Tony My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 4 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 245 Amount Saved: 60 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 32 Seconds: 22

Erika: I'm not posting to say if it works or not, rather to just respond to your inquiry about what others did with cutting back. For the last two weeks I cut back in anticipation of my quit today. I told myself I was doing this to work on dis-associating smoking with locations. I stopped smoking at home and didn't run down the street to park my car and smoke either (other mom's out there may also relate to this one). I only smoked at work. I chewed nicotine gum in the evenings. This meant that I had a weekend in there with which to contend. So I wore a patch last sat and sun. I told myself that I was gonna reduce the amount at work to just 2 or 3, but I couldn't bring myself to do that. I left Friday with two cigarettes. Yesterday I had one in the morning then put on the patch. (I wasn't even allowed to enjoy it. My husband asked me in front of the kids why was I going outside. I said I was getting something from the car. I went out the front door and around to the back of the house to smoke. No one was fooled. Both kids, one at a time decided they had to tell me something and so they hollered out the back door. My mother even called during those 7 minutes. Truly I am too old for this). Today I woke early (6:00) so that I could have my last cig. in peace. Then I put on the patch. Now I'm a non-smoker (just kidding!). Stay tuned as I anticipate the next phase of my quit - the part where I don't smoke. Hi Erika, Welcome. I felt nervous before I quit also. Use the search message for "25 everyday reasons to quit". It helped me a lot to not back out of quiting. I had a slip up but I'm still working on my quit. There are plenty of people here for support. Hi Erika and Welcome! Your determination to quit MUST be stronger than your desire to smoke. You sound like you have the determination, you have done your preparation, and have set your quit date. Cutting back can do 2 things, it shows you that you can and will take control of your life back, and it shows you the ones you will have the most trouble with, which will help you prepare for them better when you quit. I also cut back by postponing the morning one, the one after eating, and the one after ... (maybe I better not say it in front of the children?); I quit smoking in the car entirely, I quit smoking with coffee, and I moved all the smoking stuff outside so that there was nothing in the house to associate smoking with. I smoked for more than 40 years so I know that it CAN be done. You can do it too. We're here for you. A huge welcome to you Erika. Yes, I'm sure you're nervous right now. But sometimes the thought of jumping in can be worse than actually doing it. Get yourself good and ready, whatever method you choose and keep posting right here. It really helps. All the best to you, Cheers, Jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 110 Amount Saved: $27 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 9 Mins: 37 Seconds: 58

Erika Yes you can be, oneday a non/ex smoker. Good for you to come and get prepared. I tried to quit several times. This time I did try to cut back a little. I was not real stringent on it. I did try to hold off on the morning cig. Tried to wait a little after eating. and did not smoke before bed. Although when the craving intensified I gave in. I only did this for a week before I quit. I will say this when you quit you quit. Do not give in to smoking 1 or 2 a day. This will only prolong withdrawls. I did it in my first attemp to quit. For 2weeks I only smoked 1. Then quit for 4 day. I went threw 3weeks of hardcore withdrawls. Not fun at all. This time was not to bad. Sucked, never want to do it again, but I am still smoke free. Loving it..
