Anyone scared of going on medication?

Dont be scared of going on medication. I was just like you at one time. I have coped with anxiety attacks for a very long time as well. I will admit I had to try several different ones before I found one that worked for me, but it will improve your quality of life tremendously when you do find the right one. I was ashamed of someone finding out and thinking i was a mental case. My advice to you is to go ahead and start taking something, and be patient. When I started Zoloft, it took several weeks before they began to take effect, but when they did i felt like a new person. (and it doesn't affect my ability to function with a clear head which was my main fear.) I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you all for response. I am going to discuss things with my Doctor tomorrow. Yeh, isn't funny that at the time I am having a panic attack I can't say to myself I haven't died in 10 years while having them why would I die now. It is such a funny disorder. I have been feeling much better the past couple of days but the last 2 weeks have been hell. I will let you all know how the doctors appointment goes. THANKS AGAIN!

Hi Amy, I've had GAD/Panic for over 2 years, when I was first diagnosed, I thought OMG how will I get through this. So at this stage the Doctor thought I should go on medication so I tried Aropax - which ended up with side effects like a panic attack, then I tried Zoloft with the same result. I was only on both of these for a short amount of time (not even 2weeks), but I'm sure glad I didnt get stuck on them. So basically its been 2years with no medication, and I don't know how I've done it. Sure I get anxiety symptoms all the time and sure they p*** me off and sure I may think I'm gonna die, but deep down we KNOW we aint going to die from feeling anxious. If you've had it for 2 or 10 years don't you think that if we were gonna die from these symptoms they either would of gotten worse or perhaps we would be dead by now. Anyway thats how I think when I start to feel abit yukky. Hope this helps. Take care

While I wasn't afraid of going on meds, I was very aprehensive because of what I knew could be some of the side effects and I didn't want things anymore "messed up" than they already were. I talked about my concerns with my Dr and he was very understanding, he started me on a very low dose and I'm working my way up to a theraputic dose..the good thing is I haven't experienced anything that I was expecting..there have been some SE, but nothing I won't eventually be able to overcome. Tell your Dr what's on your mind.

I find myself in agreement with Pamela, again! Seems like I agree with you alot! I, too, thought that taking meds were a sign of weakness and that I should be able to control the symptoms by just using my mind. This may work for some people, but in my case I was wasting my life living in such fear. Over the last 3 years I've tried several different ones, some have worked great and some made it worse. But nothing is as bad as the panic was. The meds don't take all the fear and anx away, you still have to work on changing the way you think about panic. But taking the meds help me to be able to concentrate on changing my thoughts, and that's what I needed! Panic tries to control you through fear and worry, it's natural that it makes you afraid to take meds, it doesn't want you to do anything that could get rid of it. Think of panic as a real 'being', it's thinking of ways to keep you under it's control. Fear of meds, fear of going to the doctor, these are all ways for it to keep you exactly where it wants you to be, under it's control. Try some meds and go to the doctor and explain your fears and doubts. And then try the meds with the positive thought in your head that it will help you! Side effects don't last long and if you find that one doesn't work for you, try another! It can really improve your life, it did for me!

amy, I used to feel like you did and I never wanted to take any medication, I thought it was a sign of weakness if I needed to take a pill to keep my mind under control. but finally I had no other choice because my anxiety started to control my life. I've been on Zoloft for 6 months now and it took a little while to find the correct dose and for the full affects to kick in , but it was the best decision I've made concerning this disorder. In the very beginning for just about a week I had some side effects, just upset stomach and vivid dreams, but that was it. Whatever small side effects you may have are nothing compared to panic. Just talk to your doctor about it he'll know which medication is best for you. Good luck

Thanks Susanne. Its one of those things where I think I just have to take a chance. Not taking any medication obviously hasn't helped so far cause they always keep coming back. Thanks for your input and I will talk to my doctor.

Dear Amy, Talk to your doctor and discuss a plan that works best for you. Some people are able to cope without medication and some aren't. It is based on the individual. Keep posting your thoughts and concerns, we'll help you as much as we can. Susanne

I have had panic attacks for over 10 years and have never been on any medication. For the first several years I never knew it was an option but now I am considering it more and more. I have a doctors appointment on Friday and I will talk to her about it. I am really scared about taking anti-depressants but I will do whatever it takes. I hear all your stories about trying different types and having bad side affects or them not working. I think that will make my situaton even worse. I never take any kind of medication like Advil or Tylenol or even cold medicine because I don't like some of the side effects and cold medicine has caused me to freak out in the past. Is there anyone that has gone through this without using drugs? Or is there anyone who has had a good experience with the drugs? Its kind of my last resort and if it doens't work then who knows what I will do. THanks, Amy
