Maggie my love, I just came off the phone to a friend of mine who has not smoked for eight and a half years. He still loves the smell of a fresh cigarette and still has the odd craving. This may sound odd but I am learning to live with the cravings and just know they go away. This is VERY important I feel so please remember it My concentrationhas returned and I no longer live in fear of Old Nick1 So for your 'friends' to say it is out of your system let them think on! Thats enough of my rambling just do a post headed 'To Phil' if you need me xx I see you are getting a bit ratty(f@@@ you etc) we have all been there and will be again I am sure! Get it out of your system tell them then laugh! Maggie, way to go on 24 days. I had a rough day around 60. My hubby said " should you be finish with this by now".And he smokes. I smoked for 16 years, no way will it be completly gone after 1 or 2 months. I will say it is better. Nothing like that first month. Hang tight you are doing fine. Next time any body says anything, just remind them how long you smoked. That there is also 4000 chemicals in cigs not just nico. And that anything worth doing is worth doing it right. You are learning a new way of life. Rome was not built in a day. not even a month.... Miagi and Maggie Lets stop and think about this. Twenty some days is a great start and I congratulate you on such a wonderful job. In twenty some days or four weeks you have shown yourself that you are the master of this quit. Really think about this twenty some days you have been through h and you are still with us. And the craves, sure they hang on, but become fewer as time goes by. How often are you craving per day and how long? Are the craves shorter and less intense than say two week ago? Just remember time is the healer of most things in our lives that we need to distance ourselves from. If you ever had a love and lost that love, you dont get over it over night. It hurts some times badly as many of us may have experienced once or more in our lives. The trick with love and cigarettes is what? You need a replacement part for the love just like the smoking. That is where your tool box comes into play. Distract, deny and do not dwell on the urges. We build the habit of smoking over years and it takes the time is the healer to make us better. It hurts to quit but you are doing this and I am very proud of you. And you know, you both are those who I see as a winner. You will be making it just keep doing what you do and keep telling yourself: I dont need that smoke. I will just want another one in thirty minutes if I break down and smoke. Deny, distract, self talked, be proud of your strength and may God shine his light on you.
Is this really all in my head?
IMO, once the nicotine is gone, yes it is all in our heads. This is a good thing, not a bad thing. Because since we know where the problem lies, we know where to take the battle to. Our self-talk/thoughts contribute to how we feel. Identify the thoughts that cause feelings for a death stick. Some of these thoughts are subconscious (usually have to do with past memories) and other thoughts are our own self-talk. Really pay attention to self-talk. If our self-talk isn't doing anything positive for us, start learning how to turn it around so that it does. Situations or certain settings can bring about subconscious triggers/memories. Emotions (due to memories) can bring about triggers as well. Triggers will lead to craves if we do not change our thinking. But by learning how to identify and modify our thinking ... we can retrain our minds so that triggers do not equal craving. Nicodemon is no match for emotional coping skills. If you want to change your life, change your mind. (Take what you like and leave the rest.) Maggie, Quitting smoking involves so much more than just "not smoking". When we quit we have to learn how to live our lives in a whole new way. There are many changes we go through physically, mentally, and emotionally. Unfortunately, the quit isn't over in a matter of a few hours or a few days. It has been said it takes anywhere from 12-18 months to fully quit smoking. That each season must be experienced without giving in to the temptation to smoke. I agree 100% with this philosphy. Quitting is a soul searching, life changing experience. I refer to it as a journey down the road less traveled. A journey of self-discovery, improvment and accomplishment. You have only begun your journey. You will begin to see the world in a whole new light as your quit progresses. The cravings do not last forever, it only seems as if they do. But the growth you will experience from this adventure has just begun. Congratulations on your 24 days! You are doing awesome! Say this... So then the average stay at a heroin withdrawal clinic should be 3 days? Once it's out of your system your just fine and life is good and it's like it was never there? It's that simple huh? Oh this isn't heroin? You're right, it's just as addictive though. Tell your friends that alcohol leaves a persons system in a matter of hours - yet people struggle with the addiction for years? It's a habit AND a substance your walking away from. It takes time. Tell your friends to look up the word sympathy and the word patience.
