I've quit with the patches and then quit cold turkey. Before I quit cold turkey I did a lot of reading to get my self prepared mentally. (The Easy Way to Quit Smoking, Allan Carr) But for me Cold Turkey was easier and quitting cold turkey stuck as my last and final quit. Cold Turkey did not draw the quit time out so long as the patches do, and after 4 months of no nicotine at all, if felt like I hadn't been smoking for a year.
I know everyone is different and you will find the right path for yourself. The important thing is to make the commitment to not smoke and even if you fail, you get up, knock off the dust and keep heading toward a smoke free life.
