NRT or no NRT?

I went on the patch with the idea that I first needed to learn how to do new things with myself other than smoke. I wanted to change my routine...which is hard enough to do smoker or non-smoker...change of any type is hard. After a week of doing new things, I cut my patches in half. This is day 2 with 1/2 a patch and I don't notice a difference. "THE BOOK" helped me to realize too that I'm not missing out on anything. It's often hard to make your heart and mind work together, they often disagree (logical thought and feelings never co-operate). You are better off without the poison. You are not missing out on anything. trace p.s. you smell much prettier too. :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 188 Amount Saved: $81 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 16 Mins: 5 Seconds: 14

To Phil and All... I want to put my 2 cents in here too.. I quit for 10 yrs...cold-turkey...the hardest way to quit...period I decided to quit again around 2001 using various methods: I used patches, and quit using them because they made me smell like urine and I was embarassed to go to work wearing them. The patches also kept me awake at night. I had to take them off before I went to bed. I was not successful using the patches. Zyban gave me a headache. Wellbutrin was a little better, but even with it I was having dreams and my sleep was interrupted. 2006 December.. After some coaxing by my daughter, I decided to use Chantix...and I am not sorry. I've never used anything like it. I can't believe the restful sleep I am getting. I am having dreams, but they are the good ones that you need to go into REM. I wake up feeling like I've had 8 hrs or more. It's cheaper than using the patches (for me). Depending on your insurance or pay scale plans in your community resources, the cost can vary...the normal price for it is approximately $130 for a months supply (it cost me $85. I used to buy cheap cigaretts ($19 a carton)and smoked 15 packs...a week (carton 1/2)...about $30 a week on smokes....X 4 weeks...= $120 a month The thing about the patches that concerned me was the idea that I wasn't really giving up the nicotine...and just how long would I have to use them before I would no longer recognize the habit...(how much would that cost...a box of patches is like almost $50 right?) Now Phil, you say you're having withdrawal symptoms even though you used the patches for how long...4-months? If you still have to struggle...I suggest you get the Chantix.. By the way...if anything negative comes from the Chantix...I will be the first to post on it. My follow-up date with the Dr. on the Chantix is Friday this week (my last week for the first months rx) Anybody else out there have some imput on the Chantix...been taking it for longer than a month...????? They recommend you take it for 12 weeks. hanging tuff...auntdeb My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 685 Amount Saved: $68.18 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 0 Mins: 11 Secon

Hey Phil - Here's the way I understand it (and by no means am I remotely connected to the medical community), using NRT's keeps your body addicted to nicotine while you try to undo your smoking habit. Sooner or later, you have to quit the nicotine, in any form. The nicotine withdrawal should only last a day or two and should produce minimal symptoms. I'm not an NRT fan but alot of folks have used them sucessfully. I say cold turkey or Chantix for new quitters. Just my two cents... Good luck. -- 2tone My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/26/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 20 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 571 Amount Saved: $110 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 8 Mins: 20 Seconds: 36

Me too, on the Chantix. I think it is now THE choice above all else for smoking cessation. All I have been experiencing is some minor abdominal cramps and the cool dreams. Coming from someone who's tried everything, Chantix is the way to go... My MD gave me a six month precription. My insurance paid everything but $20.00. I'll keep taking them until they're gone. Wonderful product and highly recommended. -- 2tone My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/26/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 20 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 578 Amount Saved: $110 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 9 Mins: 21 Seconds: 12

Absolutely right Phil. NRT's or anything else is not a 100% answer! Attitude, resolve, determination, courage and more is what it takes for a successful quit no matter what circumstances we are facing in our lives. Hiya Phil, In my 1st 2 attempts I used the 14 mg patch.. BIG mistake with that mg. Thought I would CHALLENGE myself and start low :( Plus my attitude especially in the 2nd attempt sucked big time. Anyway, this time, with more tools in place, new ATTITUDE ! and now using the 21 mg patch I'm doing far better. Monica isn't as strong as she and other's think she is.. I am doing the full program of the NRT straight through to the end and taking it one day at a time! Love and hugs, M. Hey Phil, I started with patch (21 mg) and wellbutrin. I only did the 21 mg for 2 weeks, then 14mg for 2, then 7mg for almost 2 weeks. Shortly after getting off of the patch, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the patch causing my sleeplessness, but the wellbutrin. So I quit wellbutrin and now I am getting great sleep...Thank god!! I do feel good being completely off of everything. Everybodies quit is different, The reccomended way is to follow the manufacturer. The only thing I did different was I didn't do the 21 mg for 6 weeks, From the beginning I felt like 21mg was too much nicotine for me, so I finished that 1st box & dropped down. Everybody is different though....Whatever works for you is the best way!! Good Discussion! There is no MAGIC cure, to totally eliminate the cravings and quit smoking. You still have to WANT to quit. It will not always be hard and it will be doable, no matter what route you take whether NRT or Not. I personally used the patches, according to the program on the instructions and I am convinced that I would be still smoking if I had not done this. But then, that is just me. I have been off all nicotine since early December. My hubby,(quit at the same time) on the other hand still chews 3-4 pieces of nicotine gum per day. I told him not to worry.....what counts is that he is not smoking!! I'm wondering how many people did the test to determine their level of physical addiction. I can't remember exactly what my number was but it was fairly low. Despite that, I used the patches for the full course. For me there was very little difference "physically" between the 7 mg patch and nothing at all....the hardest part was acknowledging that this was really IT. Physically, I was ready to give up the 7 mg patches earlier than I did (one time I didnt put it on till after supper) but emotionally I was kinda skeered to give up my security blanket. I still have "craves" but I didn't become addicted to my NRT. Can't say that I've ever thought "Gee...if only I could put on a patch" If I had to put in order the tools that helped me Patches and SCC would be the most important tools...followed by Alan Carr's book, green tea and my remote control.
