Hooked on the Patch

Great question, imallclear, thanks!! I would say that I've been in the baaack and forth for the entire time. I keep saying to myself "at least I'm not smoking"...it never ends. I'm ready for the next step! Did you do anything differently once you got the right mindset? Thanks again...

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi, everyone. I've used this site on and off in the past, and you all were extremely helpful in getting me to stop smoking last year (though I've had two minor slips). For this, I'm truly eternally grateful...I have a great deal of respect for this group and all you do!!! My dilemma is this: I'm absolutely hooked on the patch. And here's the kicker, I've been using the patch on and off for over 10 years (which means I've been "quitting" for over 10 years)!! For the first nine years on the patch, I would smoke about half the year and use the patch for half the year. Now I'm using the patch full time (and successfully not smoking), but I'm still injecting that poison. I'd love some advice on this one. While it may not be as bad as smoking, it's still expensive and annoying, and it feels like just as much of an addiction as my smoking was. Thanks. Thanks, Katy. That's very helpful...I will talk to my doc and come up with a plan. I've tried weaning according to instructions a number of times to no avail, but I'll keep trying.

Monica: Those stats are the real stats since I quit, not including two slips early on. I actually didn't mean to include my stats, as that's not my main concern... I've been on the patch since I quit and was using it fairly often before, as I said...I toggle back and forth between 21mg and 14mg. Changing: I tried Wellbutrin a few years ago and wasn't thrilled, but I like your idea. I'll think about that one and ask my doctor. Thanks. Frank....I think you should talk to your doctor and you should also start with either the 21 or 14mg patch and go through the program the way the "instructions" say. Wean yourself down to the last couple weeks on the 7 and then get off it. yes, you certainly are still giving yourself doses of nicotine with those patches and that keeps your addiction alive and demanding more. You have set up a pattern and the junky in you knows that he will get his fix at some point....that will even cause him to be more patient at times....cause he "knows" you will feed him at some point. so.....either "wean" yourself off those patches....or....I guess you could cold turkey off them???? it's up to you.....and while I don't think this is really advisable (keeping using the patch) it still beats lighting up! so talk to your doc and make a plan and then stick with it. you can accomplish this! Frank, Welcome back! Congratulations on great success. You will need to see your pharmacist and doctor regarding the path that you are currently using. They can provide knowledge and information regarding your situation. Our program can help with coping mechanisms and this may be what you need to help you get off that patch. Keep us updated :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
