Glad to know it's probably the not smoking that is messing with my blood sugar. Yesterday I had some raisins and almonds about mid-afternoon, and felt pretty good the rest of the day. It really makes me curious as to all the changes our bodies are going through without the nicotine. It's so sad.... I've smoked more years of my life than not. That makes me sad. My poor body. Let's see...Once I reach age 64, I will have been smoke free the same number of years I smoked. Hmm... interesting My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 335 Amount Saved: $63.69 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 21 Mins: 33 Seconds: 27

Hey Butterfly... nice to know about the shingles. I had some kind of weird rash... went to doctor today and she quickly identified it. Gosh... how contagious is it, if you all got it from your niece? I visited my daughter, who is at college this past weekend. I hope I didn't give it to her! I didn't realize it was that contagious. Your time for the ole' meno is coming... give it about 20 more years! Good for you on stopping smoking so young. I always said I was going to quit when I was 30, then when I was 40, then when I was 50. My 50th came last April, and my newest excuse was that I still would be 50 for 12 months, so I had 12 months to quit. Isn't that pathetic? Something just snapped though, got sick of it all and quit.... wasn't even thinking anymore about the fact I was going to quit when I turned 50. Anyway... good for you on quitting so young! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 31 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 319 Amount Saved: $59.83 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 16 Mins: 54 Seconds: 58

Serenty- Thanks for your response. It sounds like you know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm going to try eating the apple about mid-afternoon, and see if it helps get me through the rest of the afternoon without a sugar coma. I've been trying to go to the gym around 4:00 each day (the end of my workday), but I seem to have to fight the sugar drop, and it's getting on my nerves. I can't decide when to eat and when not to eat, and am tired of eating when I'm not even hungry, and craving chocolate at other times! I appreciate all the responses from my new non-smoking friends! Butterfly, Faith, Trailbum- Thanks for your replies! So far my shingles aren't so bad, but a little annoying, so I'm glad of that, and hope it stays that way. As for the blood sugar, Faith, thank you for your input. I, for some reason, think it is a combination of menopause and quitting smoking. I don't think it's hypoglycemia or diabetes. I have never been one of those people who could eat a candy bar and drink a pepsi in the middle of the afternoon. If I did, I'd have a sugar coma (the drop in blood sugar), in about 2 hours, and feel horrible. So, I've always had to keep the sugar to a minumum except after meals with other foods. But it seems like days I haven't really had any sugar, other than the sugar coming from carbs, I still fight the sugar level dropping. For some reason I do think it's related to menopause. I think hot flashes and sugar comas are cousins, maybe. Glad your doctor saw some relationship, Faith. I talked to mine yesterday, and she was not hearing what I was saying, so I gave up. I'm going to pay attention to what I eat, when it happens, etc, and go from there. By the way... Chocolate is still in my diet! As far as chocolate goes -- never give it up! ha! Those little dove bars are my chocolate fix these days! Trailbum, The connection between shingles and quitting smoking is interesting. I wondered about that when I read the causes of shingles. I didn't realize I was that stressed, but I guess my body did. My doctor yesterday wasn't very helpful with anything. She wasn't listening and was answering questions I didn't ask! I've also gone through some personal issues the past few months that are stressful, so... guess having shingles are better than feeling depressed. :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 32 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 323 Amount Saved: $61.76 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 18 Mins: 4 Seconds: 39

I'm still having trouble with my blood sugar levels dropping if I don't eat every two hours. I'm trying to figure out how much of it has to do with quitting smoking, menopause, both or what. Does anyone else experience this, who is smack in the middle of menopause? The topic warned you men against reading this! I know you are reading it anyway, because that's what humans do... the opposite of what they are told! ha! Anyway... I would be interested to know if anyone else has trouble dealing with this. I'm to the point where I don't know if it's a hot flash or a "sugar coma"! I was at the doctor's office today, to discover that I have shingles. Who gets shingles? I asked her about the blood sugar thing... which we are going to test next week, but she doesn't think it will test normal. My best defense against it is to eat every couple of hours, but if I graze like a cow every day, I might end up looking like one, and I don't want to look like a cow. Moooo.... Interesting, I've been through menopause and I don't care what the experts say... it starts working on you in your mid to late 30's. Mild hot flashes start, your periods get heavier, your sex drive changes (ummm), your moods start fluctuating... and doctors look for a dry vagina...to see if your hormones are changing...which is so stupid. " (Don't they realize that you may be producing an abundance of a hormone as opposed to it drying up?) Menopause is hormonal related (progestren, estrogen, testostrom) so is diabetes/hypoglycemia high sugar/low sugar(insulin) "only my opinion, but I think they are related" Diet...is the most important thing we can do for ourselves. Apples are great, sweet potatoes also and one more thing "Flax Seed" (I use a coffee grinder and have one tablespoon a day...with cereal or in my juice)..it is part of the omega oils discussed. ...chocolate does have its benefits too When we quit smoking, our body has to clean the mess up some way...and it needs good nutrition...to grease the wheels of healing! Shingles: Usually an adult (who has the dormant shingle virus)is exposed to the chicken pox virus from a child and causes the virus to erupt in the adult, but...also and I know this for a fact (my sister in-law is a nurse who contracted shingles from a nursing home and absolutely gets hysterical if anyone even calls her with news of someone with either virus or a noirmal case of herpes (herpes are related as well). She had to retire from nursing because of it. I'm having the sugar craves too. I bought some granola bars to have with my coffee in the mornings. I used to smoke with the coffee...yuck!! Now the Quaker Man is my morning mate! You'll get through this...auntdeb My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 31 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,571 Amount Saved: $147.25 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 7 Mins: 48 Seconds: 10

Interesting (& Butterfly): I'm so sorry to hear about your shingles -- Ask Trailbum for some advice. See past posts from Trailbum about shingles -- poor Trailbum! Poor Interesting and Butterfly! Anyway, I do know that shingles comes from the chicken pox virus that remains dormant in your system once you've had the chicken pox. STRESS can bring it out in you. I had a rare form of shingles several years back which caused terrible electrical-like pains behind my ears and then facial paralysis. Very scary, but the neurologist said it was a form of shingles. NOT contagious, to my knowledge. Never heard that. It sucks, but you will get through it (hey, kind of like quitting smoking, huh?) As for the low blood sugar, Interesting, it could very well be related to menopause. I'm 55 next month and have been going through this since I was 39 (oh, oh, look out, Butterfly!). Lots of fun and interesting things happen along with menopause. But I can tell you that my blood sugar has become more of a difficulty since I quit smoking. I see my doctor on Friday for a physical, and hope to learn more about how to deal with it all. I'm gaining about a pound a week. YIKES!!! Hope you both breeze right through this latest little "challenge".
