Changing, There is lots of hope. I am about to enter week 6 in a two more days. I can honestly say this week I have thought about it much less. I also found that I do not allow myself to dwell on it when the thought comes up. I just move on. I have tried to create an indifferent attitude about it. Sort of like..... I don't care if others smoke...I don't. If memories of smoking or thoughts can create a trigger it makes sense that you will have triggers more often.... and more intense if you continue to allow your brain to picture yourself smoking. Good luck... and lots of support. To make the first week is a great acomplishment!!!!! [font=georgia][color=green]Hi Changing!! First of all, I want to congratulate you on making it through your first weekend as a non-smoker! What a wonderful choice you have made, and it looks wonderful on you! I must tell you, the cravings will begin to slow down and will be easier to deal with before you know it. Just remember, a craving [b]WILL[/b] pass in a minute or two, but you have to make sure you let it pass and don't let it grab a hold of you. When you feel it coming, push yourself away from whatever you are doing that minute and start taking deep breaths. Breath in through your nose for 5 seconds, then purse your lips, close your eyes and breath out through your mouth for 5 seconds. IT WILL HELP! It shocked me at how much it helped with me, but it does! You know the nicodemon is lurking around you waiting for the moment for you to cave - but you make him waste his time - Don't cave! Don't pass of what you are doing as anything but wonderful! It is a great challenge and you will be much stronger when it is over. Control your life and choices - don't let nicodemon control it for you. It will get easier as time goes by, and you can do this, we all have faith in you! When you hit a rough patch and you feel like you can't take it anymore - jump on here and put "HELP" in a post. Everyone here is going through, or has gone through what you are, and we are all here to support you. This is a wonderful site and never be afraid to use it!! Be sure to mark your quit meter in your posts so that all can rave on how well you are doing, because you are doing great! Changing I don't know if this will mean anything to you, but here goes...I always picture the act of thinking to be like stepping into a river... In the first instance you think the thought, and then stop and in stopping the thought you step out of the river...Now the next time you begin to think the same thought, you are stepping back into the same river again, however, the perceptions that you now have about that thought have to be different, because you are stepping into the same river, but its not the same water, as the river is in constant motion. And so it is with you...As you move further along, your perceptions concerning the addiction change, just like the water changes as it flows in the river...In the case of nicotine addiction "the truth really does set you free"...the struggle is in allowing our rational minds to accept the fact that sucking down 4000 chemicals is not a particularly good thing to do...The fact that that statement is so simple and true is a testament to the power that our addiction holds over us, it convinces us that that statement is false...However, any school child could tell us otherwise... Your perceptions of the same thoughts (smoking) change and so it is with our addiction...As you practise not smoking, your perceptions of the process change...you still have the same thoughts, but your not stepping into the same water...Your perceptions of these things begin to soften as you realize that you are not giving anything up...On the contrary, in the future as you think of these things you will be very joyful, because your thoughts and your physical sense of well being will tell your mind that you are gaining great things and giving up nothing at all...You are giving up the illusion that is at the heart of our addiction... Sorry for the rather esoteric explanation, but its the way I think about these things and it helps me a great deal to understand that as long as I am addicted to nicotine, I will be accepting as true that which is a very obvious lie... changing You are beginning to see how much of a mind game this thing is...You must find distractions to side track your thoughts about cigarettes...Remember, we have wired our subconscious to desire a smoke in connection with many many stimuli...I drink a lot of water when ever a thought of smoking enters my little cranium...In fact I drink so much water these days that I slosh abit when i walk...But thats ok...For me dehydration seems to kick in craves...so I'll drink the entire red sea before I smoke another butt... This is actually a great mental exercise, quitting that is...You will begin to find ways of controlling your thinking that you never imagined you could access...This is a very very potent addiction and it is far more than a physical manifestation...It is deeply engrained in each of us and must be rooted out day by day...YOU CAN DO THIS...It will take discipline and a whole bunch of courage...If you supply the discipline, I promise someone here will help you with the courage part... I like those concrete pointers Rainie. My 2 cents to add would be to try to put a spin on the thoughts - or thought that you already have. Rather than think something like "gotta have it, gotta have it" or "hey i've got a few minutes right now with this money burning a hole in my pocket". You could think something like "Man, Ol'Nic is a tough old dude, but pathetic". "I'm really wanting one right now. But I also really wanted one a few minutes ago. I'm really building up strength to stay on track with this quit'n thing" "This is not easy, but it's a lot easier than some other things. Like,I'm making this choice to stop now. Othewise, I would be contributing to a possible terminal illness and rather than the difficulty of resisting the urge to stick a cig. in my mouth, I would be saying goodbye to my loved one's knowing that I was the reason for their pain". Quitting smoking doesn't give you eternal life, but it takes away suicidality of it. I know this may sound extreme. But I know that a lot of us have had these thoughts. This is a fight for life or death. It's tough. Get tougher. Hi, There is nothing wrong with thinking about smoking. Before you quit smoking was on your mind all the time too. When can I have one? When is this task over so I can smoke? In your brains are so many links to a cigaret, how can you not think about it. But....That was when you were a smoker, now you are a non smoker so you are in a different situation. If smoking comes to your mind you can think: I used to smoke in a situation like this, but sonce I don't smoke, I'll do something else, something healty etc. That will help you more. If you try not to think about smoking it will become an obsession and that is not good ofcourse. So, my advice to you: Change your mind about smoking and you will feel better soon. Good luck. I've made it through my first weekend smoke-free - not an easy task! I'm taking Chantix, using my quit program tools, and doing everything I can think of to make it through one day at a time. But, I'm still thinking (obsessing) about smoking every single minute. When will this stop?
