this is for all you long term quiters. how long does it take to feel like a nonsmoker, or should i say, how long does it take to forget about smoking? is everyone different or is there a certain timeframe?

It can be very daunting at first. I used to have thoughts of how smoking was such a big part of my life for so long, I'm crazy to think I'll get through the rest of my life without them. But then I look at people I know who have never touched a cigarette. They're ok. And once the initial withdrawal symptoms resolve and that nicotine has worked its way out of your system, you will be just like all those lifelong non-smokers. I'm not saying it won't be a battle sometimes, I'm sure it will. And since I quit, I have been a raging lunatic. Just ask my husband, the poor guy! Do not feel pathetic....feel good that you are getting through it! I actually, literally, JUST finished a really good crying session. Then I came here, talked about it and felt a WHOLE lot better! It totally sucks feeling like this, but we are saving our lives and healing our souls and our bodies. I prefer not to think of crying as negative, rather, I like to think of it as cleansing. I feel it's important to cry and get it out. Holding those feelings in will only make you feel worse. Let the tears flow and your fears will go!!! Today I saw my dad for the first time since I quit. He is staying with me and my husband tonight. Anyway I was having one of those blasted cravings and just started crying uncontrollably. Sorry dad!!! He is a smoker that has quit before and started again so he understands my tears and is one of my biggest supporters. The tears that I was shedding felt so free and liberating now that I think about it. I am proud of you and me for not caving. I agree with what everyone has said thus far. And I'm right there with Tutti, I was so mad at everything that I cried too! I couldn't even look for my car keys without crying. I felt like I needed a cigarette to cope with any stress yet I knew I wanted to quit...so I cried in despair! I've made it over 48 hours now, and again, drinking water is so important! In fact, I drank over 96 ounces the first day of my quit. Janine - been there done that! I know how you feel. I know it's not for everyone and everyone prepares for this differently, however, I was so emotional (tears, rage, frustrated) that I always failed my quit because I couldn't function. BUT, I finally got my doctor to prescribe Zyban (some people are using Chantrix (sp?) and it has removed all negative emotions from not smoking. It's saving my life so please consider if you can talking to your doctor and asking if you qualify for this drug. Janine, I'm on Day 5 now of my quit. If you'll look at the forums under Coping with Withdrawals, you'll see my post called, "Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me..Deep Dark Depression, Excessive Misery." ha ha ha Janine, I'm laughing at the moment but on Day 3, I felt like a serial killer on a crying jag!! I was pissed off because I wanted to smoke, pissed off that I wanted to quit, pissed off that I was craving a smoke so bad, pissed off that I didn't have a cigarette anywhere around, pissed off because I felt like a wimp, I started crying and then, I got pissed off because I started crying!! I felt pathetic. I had to come to this site to vent because I really felt like I was about to cave in and go buy a pack of cigarettes. Man, that would have given me yet another thing to be pissed off about. The thing is Janine, I know it's not the REAL you having crying spells anymore than it was the REAL me the other day. I think it's that addict, the part of us so hooked to nicotine, who's having a temper tantrum. I think we cry to release some of the pressure from the withdrawals we're feeling. So, let the addict rant because that means you're making progress. Every time you feel miserable craves and those God awful withdrawals, keep reminding yourself that your body is healing with each and every one of them. You ARE making progress with each and every symptom that you feel. Have your gum, hard candy, sunflower seeds, toothpicks, straws, whatever, to keep that hand to mouth thing occupied. And for those cravings, drink tons and tons of water. I don't know what it is about water but, it helps you through the cravings. Plus, move around some....even if it's 50 jumping jacks, a quick shower, brushing your teeth, whatever, just do something during that crave. For God's sake, keep venting. We're here for you and you need to talk about what you're feeling. It really, really helps. And when you feel that you're having a horrible time of it, talk to us and we'll get right back with you. You're doing great. This too will pass. FreshAir, Good for you!!! You're doing so great. I drank a whole lot more water on Day 1 too. It was a lot easier to get massive quantities of water down on that first day. On Day 3, drink as much water as you can then if you can catch a nap during the day and then go to bed early tomorrow night, that'll be good. When the sun rises the next morning, that 72 hours will be over with and behind you. Yee Hah!!! You're almost there and I'm right here with you. That crying thing was strange and so out of character the other day, wasn't it? Man, I'd get up with tears in my eys, walk off where no one could see me, my chin quivering, and think to myself, "Oh crap!! What is happening here? This isn't me and I have no control over these tears." It was pretty shocking for me. But I realized that I was just blowing off steam. It was either cry or smack my husband around just a little bit. ha ha ha ha Holler at me if you need to talk. I'll be checking in A LOT!! Gotta have my buddies here to talk to.
