Gym goers - thoughts please?

Serenity I have found that celery and peanut butter is the answer for me. I carry both in a little lunch box with an ice pack. I don't leave home without my celery! I cut it into cigarette size. You will find that folks at the gym will be very understanding and supportive. Try to incorporate yoga into your schedule. It reduces stress and will teach you to breathe properly among many other things you will use in your life. I don't know what causes these feelings but I am in complete sympathy with you. Perhaps they come with the life style change we are making. I'm assuming that you have a clean bill of health from your doctor and that he/she is aware that you are trying to quit smoking. If so call them and ask if you should be concerned. If not make an appointment and get checked out. It will help you with your quit and with your exercise to know you are starting with a clean bill of health. Good Luck!

Hey serenity, thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I get seriously shaky and lightheaded if I don't eat before a workout so I always eat a banana just before. It seems to have enough energy, calories, to get me through. Then another snack like nuts straight afterward to keep the shakes off. Usually works! :) serenity2 Sounds like your blood sugar to me, but I'm not a Doc. or..you might need to replenish your fluids. What works for me when I feel "hunger" (the kind of hunger that either gives me a headache, makes me feel like I could just fall asleep, or light headed) ...is complex carbs. (Nuts..or fresh fruit. Serenity 2, Cottage cheese, fruits (apple, orange, grapefruit), lowfat yogourt. These are the types of things I eat after the gym. Don't worry, I go to the gym about 5 days a week and I need to eat every 3 hours or so- small things like i listed above, because exercise speeds up your metabolis, so your body needs feul more often. If I don't, I feel terrible- light headed, weak, grumpy and unable to concentrate. Peanut butter is a really good one too.. Yeppers - It happens and it means you have to change your eating habits. I eat 1/2 protein bar on the way to the gym and 1/2 after plus and apple. If lunch is more than 2 hours after work out then I may have another light snack. The trick for me is finding foods that give me lots of energy, fill me up but don't add too many calories. If you are light headed, I think you need to eat. Do other members have good ideas for high energy/low calorie snacks? Hi guys, I am new to this whole gym-going thing before. I used to get a LOT of exercise but never, ever went near a gym. So, it's all in its early stages for me, not too familia with the equipment and not sure what's "normal" in terms of resonse/meaning etc. Today I did about a 50 minute session. 10 minutes warm up on the bike followed by about 25 minutes on the cross-country porgramme. Moved onto weights type machines and leg press type. Anyway, ate my normal lunch (normal for trying to watch what I eat) but by mid afternoon, felt so hungry I was light headed. Ate at the cafe I was passing. A few hours later, same thing. Light headed and really hungry and HAD to eat again. Is this sometimes normal following a gym session? because I'm only using a gym to lose weight and seems to me, if am going to come out and have to stuff my face, I'd maybe be better picking another form of exercise???? Any thoughts/advice? Hi guys, thanks for all the advice. To be honest, I haven't felt too great off and on since that last gym session. I have been to the doctor. he thinks it's just the shock to my normally sedentary (complete sloth!) system. He's checking blood sugars etc. just to be on the safe side but my heart rate is fine and my blood pressure is on the low side. I also had to do three induction sessions at the gym with a trainer guy before I was let loose so's he could check pulse etc. and what I was capable of. I haven't even been able to go back to watching what I eat as longer than a couple of hours without food and I feel FRIGHTENINGLY weak/light headed. I am going to be depressed when I step on those scales! I am trying to take a short walk in the evenings with my daughter but that's it for now. Once I feel a bit better, I might try swimming since that's more my thing. Not sure how much of a part the halfing of the NRT has played since I am certainly hungrier than before in general. Always eat something after exercise. Windy is right...and protein bars are perfect...a little carb and some protein. Also be sure to drink water afterward.
