Day 2 gone wrong

I screwed up already. As soon as I woke up this morning I automatically went and had a cig. I'm sure it was out of habit because that's what I always do in the morning. Unfortunately, the rest of the day got worse. I tried very hard, but the cravings got very bad. It seemed like they happen around the times where I always have a cig. I tried to do things around the house to keep me busy. Nothing helped. I tried to give it a few minutes to see if it would pass, but my mind kept telling me to have it. I caved in. I know what I did was wrong. I feel ashamed and embarrased. How do I get back on track? I'm sick of being a failure. For once, I'd like to win at least one major battle in my life. :mad:

I understand totally!!! I did the same thing after a 20 day quit. It was like I just forgot that I didn't smoke. My husband lit up and thats all it took. I lit up and didn't even give it a second thought. I to was ashamed and beat myself up. But I just got back up and giving it another try. So far so good. I have had major surgery so theres not a whole lot I can do right now. I suck on lots of mints and I'm avoiding the phone and the car. Wish I could avoid my husband... ;p I wish he would quit. Sure would be easier on me. Good luck and just keep trying!

Jaws....it's O.K. Just because you messed up doesn't mean you can't do it again. Listen...I am an EXPERT quitter. Ya know why? Because I have done it over and over and over again. Yet....I am convinced that because of my failures it became and asset to this determined quit I am having this time. I learned from ALL..ALL ..ALL.. my mistakes and took them to heart. I thought about what I did wrong and built up an inner confidence I would not make that same mistake again. Ya ever heard of the phrase..."Practice makes perfect"? Just go about doing it again. Jaws, Don't beat yourself up here. Okay? You'll learn something from this. First thing, get rid of ALL cigarettes and ashtrays in the house. Destroy those smokes. That's a hard one but they can't be there. And you can't give them to someone else to keep for you. You'll ask that person to give 'em right back. By getting rid of any and all smokes and ashtrays, when you wake up in the mornings, those cigarettes won't be there for you to grab out of habit. I know, I know. I wake up every single morning and a smoke comes to mind about 2 to 3 minutes after I wake up then I remember, "Oh yea, I'm a nonsmoker." That feels good to say that. Now this morning, I didn't think of cigarettes that quickly. So, it WILL get better. Get your house all clean and fresh. Light candles, incense or whatever to get rid of that smoke smell. You talked about wanting to smoke more while doing things where you always smoked. Those are triggers. You need to avoid those triggers until the nicotene is out of your system. You can't avoid them all but some, you can. Like the telephone, that's a trigger for me and I'm still limiting the amount of time I spend on the phone. My pc is another trigger so I had to clean it good, put a nice candle where the ashtray use to be, sit out pictures of my family, instead of sitting my drink to the left where I used to I sit it to the right now, and things like that. Find your triggers and change them up if you can't steer clear of them for a while. Are you drinking water? You have to drink lots and lots of water. I mean as much water as you can hold. Water helps with the cravings and flushes the poison out of your system. Make sure you have plenty of gum, candy, sunflower seeds, toothpicks, straws, peanuts, and anything else you can think of to help with that "hand to mouth" thing. Read the tools to the left under Quit Program Tools. They really help. Okay? Don't feel like a failure. Learn from this and try even harder. You didn't want a cigarette today.....the addict in you needed it's fix. You'll have to fight but it does get easier and you can talk to us all you need to. Ditto Phil. Make it a no-brainer in the other direction. I don't think you "always have a cigarette" in the morning. I think you always breath in the morning, you may shower in the morning, but you do not always do something that you have made a conscious choice to do and then not to do. You always "HAD" a cigarett in the morning. Today is a new day. Hang reminders eveywhere and get rid of those cigarettes. Jaws, Have you planned this quit? With coping tools and distractions, etc. Water, gum, deep breathing, and anything else that helps. Make sure to plan your quit and then stick to it. Be good to yourself in the process, and remember never look any further ahead than one step at a time. Are you using any NRT's? Patches, nicotine gum, etc? Hi Jaws Your nicotine gremlin got the upper hand for a little while huh?? But remember that's all he is - just a little gremlin that can be tamed. You try a variety of tactics at the beginning but he resists most things. In fact he has a good old tantrum and the desire to appease him can be unbearable. But you are bigger than this addiction Jaws - and this is a battle that you are certainly capable of winning. Draw a line under this slip and begin afresh - from this moment on. The past has passed and it can't be changed but you can choose your actions from here on in. Get organised as Tutti advises and take this a day at a time. Promise that for today you won't smoke. That's all - just today. Tomorrow will take care of itself. You get back by stopping it......first and formost.....you get ALL smoking material out of the house, cars, garage, coats, etc. You line your ashtrays and pockets with hard candies and gum. You let yourself get mad that nicotine is the controling factor in your life....then you determine that YOU will take back that control. You have plans in mind of the actions you will take when the urges to smoke come on......don't fight your quit....fight the addiction. You can't set around and let yourself THINK about it. Action busts craves best in the beginning so you must keep moving....or get in the shower LOL don't think that you aren't going to have cravings OR that you can make them go away.....just ride through them while you keep busy....distract and delay and don't forget rewards!!! Lots of them at first....have some planned so they are goals that you work to.
