Oh that's all it takes. I just need to get taller. I forgot how easy that should be. :) Thanks Phil I got a good laugh from that. You know if only it was that easy............ Thank you all. This will be a great start for me. I've been trying to drink lots of water. And I start at curves next week. So hopefully in another month I won't feel so down about my weight. It just sucks that it has to be a draw back from quitting smoking. Oh well I'd rather be fat than to go back to that. Again thank you all for your advice. Forgive me becasue I'm totally healthy dumb. I don't know the first thing about what is or isn't healthy to eat. I grew up on a farm. Meat and potatoes and milk was our meals. I want to become healthy. Just wanted to know if there was a web site that I could go to that lists healty foods vs. bad foods, good carbs and bad carbs. Those are the things that I think that I should know. It's been a month since I quit and I've gained 15lbs. I'm looking into joining a gym. I can't go for a walk since we are getting a blizzard here and have been for the last couple of days. So I want to start exercising but I also know that I need to change my eating habits. I would like to find inexpensive foods since I'm on a budget and feeding 4 people. They will eat whatever I make so I'm not worried about making 2 different meals. Any advice would be grateful. Foods that are natural and/or less processed tend to be healthier. Think fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy proteins such as nuts, beans, lean cuts of meat like poultry and olive oil or canola oil. The more processed a food is, the worse it tends to be. Do a search on the web for healthy recipes or healthy snacks. There are lots of sites out there. Good luck! Fruit and veggies are the way to go. I also try to limit anything white, sugar, white rice, white bread, pasta though I love it! Do know of a good site, I'll have to catch you on the IM. Don't think I can say it here. I have lost 8 pounds , cutting way back on fat and sugar. Hi Golfer - Yep, you are right - Your quit is the most important - the weight will come later. Serenity - I had an AWESOME weekend...even if it did carry on till Tuesday (and apparently didn't suffer too much weight-wise) I would love that plate so if I see you on IM that would be great. I think I need to get a scale...I have absolutely no idea what 3 ounces or 100 grams of meat looks like???? Hi Golfergirl - I just got back from a 4 day calorie binge - eating and drinking everything that is bad for me...and I know that I will pay for it at the scales. The people here have given good advice re: what foods to choose. There is a web site that is REALLY helping re: food choices at home (especially since I tend to eat a fair bit) If I see you on IM, I've share it with you. Some people are really good at portion size (I am terrible at that), others are doing well on low carb. I lost my post-smoking weight through diet changes (more fruits and veggies/low fat everything/whole grain products and lots of exercise) There's lots of good advice here and on the other web sites as well. Windy - I hope you had an absolute blast on your weekend away and to H*LL with calories. I'm sure you'll be right back on track in no time and life is for living. (not much point getting more of it by quitting, only to miss out on fun stauff because we've quit!) Anyway, I saw you mention portion sizes. There is a new product out there, invented by a lady who previously had weight problems. Basically it's a plate already divided into propper sizes for each element of your meal. So you have a section for protien, sections for carbs, section for veg etc. Apparently, just by using it for your meals (there's a cereal one as well) you can automatically drop weight because the portion sizes are right. Without weighing etc. Hopefully, it might show up on a Google search. Otherwise, I'll try IM soon. I don't know of sites but I would guess there's plenty of them. Maybe others will recommend? It seems to be about cutting out the snacking type foods -cakes, biscuits, sweets, crisps type stuff, and upping the veg and fruit. But I wanted to post to say last night, I was cooking dinner, playing around with some chicken and wondering what else to throw in with it. There's only myself and daughter in the house now and I am desperate for us to get healthier plus eat more veggie (since they have virtually no calories and are so good for us.) Well my 14 yr old won't eat veg. She'll eat fruit, but raw carrot is about the only veg. So last night I thought too bad, I'm going to sling in some veg. anyway. But I got the wrong blade on my processor (or the wrong length of time using it?!) and the veg. were getting chopped so finely you could barely see what they were any more. So I just kept going until they were practically powder. Then stirred them all in to my chicken stir fry. So, not only did we get a healthy, low calorie CHEAP version, (more veg less chicken!) but my daughter for the first time in YEARS, got carrots, onion, broccoli, mushrooms and cabbage down her throat. She loved it and was really impressed when she found out there was tons of veg in. Windy also posts about bulking out food (lasagne etc.) with veg. and I think that's a cheap and helthy way to go. Good luck.
